    A US Army veteran who was racially abused on a tram in Manchester says he has received global support from "complete strangers".

    Juan Jasso was targeted by three youths during the incident on a tram in the city centre on Tuesday morning.

    Video footage captures him being called "an immigrant" and told to "get back to Africa" when confronting the trio.

    "It's been a bit surreal how social media can instantly take an incident like this and make it global," he said.

    The victim of a suspected race hate crime on a tram in Greater Manchester has been speaking about the incident.

    Juan Jasso, a Manchester Metropolitan University lecturer who has lived in the UK for 18 years, claims he was targeted after challenging three youths who were swearing on a busy city centre tram.

    "I could see the majority of people around me weren't very comfortable. I decided to intervene and asked them to watch their language.

    Mr Jasso said it was not acceptable for people from other countries to feel threatened in the UK.  

    "I haven't been in Manchester for very long but here in the UK I've only had it happen once before."

    A boy, believed to be aged 11, is wanted over a sexual assault at Stockport train station.

    A woman was touched inappropriately by a young boy while she was waiting in the booking hall on Friday at about 15:45.

    He walked off laughing and then spat at station staff who had asked him to leave the area, British Transport Police said.

    The boy is approximately 11 years old and was wearing a black bubble jacket with a hood, black trousers and black trainers at the time.

  7. Manchester council set to approve wheelie bin plan to boost recyclingpublished at 09:48 British Summer Time 29 June 2016

    Manchester City Council is set to approve plans to almost halve the size of its black wheelie bins in an attempt to boost recycling.

    The current 250-litre bins would be replaced with 140-litre grey bins, following the example of Bolton, Stockport, Tameside and Trafford. 

    The idea is to boost the city's current recycling rate of 33%, and save money.

    Two people who were arrested over a suspected hate crime on a tram in Manchester city centre have been bailed, police have said.

    Officers were made aware of the alleged racial abuse on a tram travelling towards the city centre on Tuesday after a video surfaced online. 

    Two men, aged 20 and 18, and a boy, 16, were detained on suspicion of affray. 

    The 18-year-old and the 16-year-old have been bailed until 10 August while the teenager remains in custody for questioning.
