    There was a huge torrent in Milbrook in Stalybridge last night and the driveway of a 250-year-old cottage completely collapsed.

    Owners  Andy and Shelley who are now assessing the damage said they could not keep the water out.

    The water flowed up the street, into house houses and blew out the windows at the back. People who lived in cottages had to be rescued in boats by the fire service.

    It dealt with 230 emergency calls between 16:00 and 21:00 in Greater Manchester alone yesterday.

    A heavily pregnant mother and her six-year-old daughter were threatened with a knife during a robbery in Oldham, police said.

    A woman, 36, and her four children were at home on Friday when two men "stormed into their house" and grabbed a six-year-old girl and held a knife to her throat.

    One of the men pointed the blade at the woman’s stomach whilst the second searched the home.

    The men then stole a grey iPhone 5S, which police believe they may try sell. Detectives are appealing for information.

    The road remains closed. It is believed up to 50mm of rain fell in the area between 14:00 and 23:00 on Monday.

    Oldham Athletic have confirmed to BBC Radio Manchester that they have recently been placed under a transfer embargo by the Football League.

    Some media reports claim it is because the Latics haven't paid other clubs fees for loaned players, and for not paying Rochdale money from ticket sales for a league  match. 

    Oldham chief executive - Mark Moisley - says they hope to have the ban lifted by January when the transfer window next re-opens.

  13. Greater Manchester road study considers M60 congestion reliefpublished at 09:42 Greenwich Mean Time 22 November 2016

    A new link road joining two motorways, an orbital corridor and junction widening are being considered to tackle congestion in Greater Manchester.

    The options for the north-west area of the M60 are part of government plans to boost transport links in the region.

    It is part of a Department for Transport (DfT) and Transport for the North (TftN) study that found average peak-time speeds of less than 15mph.

    More work is needed to make a case for the various proposals, TftN said.

  14. Flooding: Tree falls on power lines in Withingtonpublished at 09:28 Greenwich Mean Time 22 November 2016

    A tree fell on to overhead power lines in Withington in Manchester last night, causing damage to a tram on the Metrolink network. No-one was injured.

    Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said it received 230 emergency calls on Monday night and dealt with 157 incidents, including rescuing dogs from a kennel in Mossley.

    Areas of Tameside including Stalybridge were also affected. Engineers worked through the night to restore power to 16,000 properties, while about 500 remained without power.
