    Zlatan Ibrahimovic says Manchester United team-mate Wayne Rooney is "the perfect player" and deserves more respect.

    His comments come as the England captain broke the club's European goalscoring record in a 4-0 win over Feyenoord.

    Rooney, 31, scored his 39th European goal as United won to ensure that a point in their final group game at Zorya Luhansk will take them into the last 32 of the Europa League.

    It comes after Rooney, who is one goal away from matching Sir Bobby Charlton's club record of 249 goals, defended himself following criticism of his conduct while on England duty.

    A branch of the Salvation Army has knitted 70ft (21m) of Bible stories, including such yarns as the Crucifixion and the feeding of the five thousand.  

    Twenty-eight women from the Warrington church have spent 10 months creating numerous scenes, making 380 figures and 60 sheep along the way.

    One knitter said she had made about 40 angels, while another said the work had "brought us all together".

    After proving popular at the church, there are plans to show it at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2017.

    A woman has been Tasered and punched in the face by three armed men who threatened her with a machete after breaking into a house in Trafford.

    The woman, in her 30s, was attacked by the masked men when they broke into a house in Claremont Road in Sale at about 01:20 on 18 November.

    They demanded money before punching her in the face twice and used a stun gun. They then drove off in her car after stealing the keys.

    A research project looking at life, particularly wildlife, in areas affected by the 1986 Chernobyl disaster has won an award.

    The University of Salford used automatic cameras in the Ukrainian side of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone for gain an insight into the secret lives of wildlife that have made the contaminated landscape their home.

    Throughout 2015, the cameras will be positioned at 84 locations, allowing a team of scientists to record the type of animals passing through the area and where they make their home.

    The scientific study of the legacy of the Chernobyl disaster won the Research Project of the Year by the Times Higher newspaper.

    The meltdown at the plant in Ukraine was the worst nuclear disaster in history.

    A report that cleared police officers of serious wrongdoing over the death of a man who was Tasered has been quashed by the High Court.

    Jordon Begley, 23, died after officers used a Taser on him in Manchester in 2013.

    The Independent Police Complaints Commission's asked for its own report to be overturned so it could reinvestigate the case.

    The judges said the report was flawed because of "material evidence" issues.

    Wayne Rooney became Manchester United's record European goalscorer as they beat Feyenoord to keep their Europa League fate in their hands.

    The Red Devils captain scored his 39th European goal for the club when he clipped the ball over Brad Jones from Zlatan Ibrahimovic's perfect through ball - with Feyenoord appealing unsuccessfully for offside.

    Rooney then set up Juan Mata to slide home the second.

    The win was secured when former Liverpool keeper Jones deflected Ibrahimovic's cross into his own net, and Jesse Lingard curled in a fourth in injury time to make it Jose Mourinho's biggest win as United boss.

    Sean Anstee has been chosen as the Conservative Party candidate for the first mayoral election in Greater Manchester next year.

    The Trafford Council leader was selected ahead of Stephen Woods, chairman of Wythenshawe & Sale East Conservatives, on Thursday.

    The 29-year-old tweeted, external he was "so proud", adding: "Our city is on the verge of something special".

    All the main parties have chosen their candidates for the 4 May election.

    Two men have been charged with assisting an offender after a man died in a shooting in Bolton.

    Michael Blake, 28, was found with gunshot wounds to the back of the head and leg near to his home in Westhoughton on 4 November.  

    He died in hospital.

    A 35-year-old man, from Gorton, and a 46-year-old man, from Stockport, are due to appear before Manchester Magistrates’ Court later.

    Witnesses are being sought after a woman was hit by a taxi in Salford.

    The 38-year-old was struck by the taxi in Lower Broughton Road near to the junction of Frederick Road at about 23:50 on 18 November.

    She suffered serious head injury and remains in a life-threatening condition in hospital. The man driving the taxi was uninjured.

    Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact them.

  16. Chinatown fire: Firefighters tackle blazepublished at 13:30 Greenwich Mean Time 25 November 2016

    Firefighters have been tackling a blaze at a disused building in Manchester's Chinatown in which two people died.

    The blaze began at about 02:15 GMT at a building in Nicholas Street and lit up the Chinatown arch at its peak.

    Harry J Wilson sent in this footage as the flames engulfed the building. The fire has led to some roads being closed, which is causing congestion in the city centre.  

    No further details are yet known about the two people found, including their ages or gender. Police say they are investigating whether they were rough sleepers.

    A disused building in Chinatown in Manchester is "very, very unsafe" and searches continue after a fire earlier gutted the site, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue said.

  18. Chinatown fire: Rough sleeper advice issuedpublished at 12:48 Greenwich Mean Time 25 November 2016

    Advice for rough sleepers has been issued following a blaze in Chinatown in Manchester city centre in which two people died.

    Manchester City Council urged homeless people to seek help after a fire broke out at a disused building in Nicholas Street at about 02:15.

    Councillor Paul Andrews said: "This is tragic and shocking news and our hearts go out to those affected by it. 

     "Our message to anyone who is sleeping rough is please come and access the help and support available. We will find you somewhere safe to stay." 

     A dedicated rough sleepers team patrolled the city centre every day offering people help, he added.

    The police said one line of inquiry was that rough sleepers died in the fire.
