    Africa Hart, 25, from Manchester, said she and her friends wanted to attend the Manchester vigil to show solidarity and demonstrate that "love trumps hate."

    They have created a bee banner. Bees – or worker bees – have been a symbol of Manchester for hundreds of years, originally as a motif of Manchester’s thriving textile trade and hard-working staff.

    Chief Constable Ian Hopkins said he was heartened to hear the acts of kindness from emergency service workers and normal people during last night's atrocities.

    He said: "The people of Greater Manchester showed the people of the world how much we care, how much we care about one another, and how much we care for those in need."

    He also thanked "the rest of the world for holding us in their thoughts".

    Thousands have turned out to pay their respects in Albert Square

    Lord Mayor of Manchester, Eddy Newman, began today's vigil in Manchester by thanking the emergency services, which prompted huge applause.

    He said: "The people of Manchester will remember the victims forever and we will defy the terrorists by working together to create cohesive, diverse communities that are stronger together.

    "We are the many, they are the few."

    A minute's silence will be held before Manchester United's Europa League final against Ajax in Stockolm on Wednesday and United's players will wear black armbands.

    European football's governing body Uefa said in a statement: "The opening ceremony will also be considerably reduced as a mark of respect for the victims of the Manchester attack.

    "This will mean that Swedish artists Axwell Ingrosso will now not be performing before the final."

    A fundraising page for a homeless man who was in the foyer of the Manchester Arena when the bomb was detonated has raised over £3,000.

    The page was set up by Michael Johns, who said he wanted to help Chris Parker "one of our most vulnerable in society who showed great selflessness and courage" as he helped those affected.

    People are arriving with flowers or food and drink for volunteer marshalls.

    There is a large police presence and the mood is quite quiet with people just standing still or talking among themselves. There is a huge amount of press here.

    Greater Manchester Police's suspect for yesterday's attack, Salman Abedi, was born in Manchester and was 22 years old.

    He has at least three siblings: an elder brother who was born in London, and a younger brother and sister who were born in Manchester.

    The family is believed to be of Libyan origin.

    They have lived at more than one address in Manchester, including the property at Elsmore Road in the Fallowfield area that was raided by police today.

    Neighbours described how the family would fly Libyan flags at some times of year.

    If he did commit yesterday's attack, it would not be the first time we have had British suicide bombers.

    Chief Constable Ian Hopkins added: "Part of [our] response has seen us arrest a 23-year-old man in connection with the attack and we have also carried out two warrants, one in Whalley Range and one in Fallowfield that included a controlled explosion to enable safe entry.

    "We understand that feelings are very raw right now and people are bound to be looking for answers.

    "However, now, more than ever, it is vital that our diverse communities in Greater Manchester stand together and do not tolerate hate.

    He also praised the "spirit of greater Manchester".
