    Manchester Council leader Sir Richard Leese pledged that the city is "not going to be beaten" by the attack.

    He told BBC 5 live: "Manchester will not bow down and will continue to grow and thrive."

    He added: "We cannot allow acts like this to beat us and we have to demonstrate that we are going to go on living our lives and this is a time when we have to be as strong as we can."

    The fact that many concert-goers were children made the events "more and more horrifying", he said.

    "You do have to question why would anybody target an audience of this sort at an event of this sort? I struggle to understand that.

    "But that’s what’s happened and we have to do our best to make sense of it and make sure that we pick ourselves and we go on."

    Gary Walker told BBC Radio 5 live he was “metres away from an explosion” while waiting to pick up his daughter from the concert.

    He said his wife suffered a “stomach wound” and “possible broken leg”.
