    Sir Bobby's brother Tommy Charlton paid his own moving tribute ahead of the service earlier.

    Speaking on BBC Breakfast, he said Bobby was the "best player he has ever seen" but admits he was "blasé" about his football talents because it was "normal" to see his brilliance.

    He said he was "outstanding" as a brother and a player.

    "I wasn't an intellectual but Bob was," he said.

    "I would love talking to him because he talked common sense."

    One legend bidding farewell to another - Sir Alex Ferguson said he was extremely moved by the occasion, as he said goodbye to an old friend.

    "It was a sombre occasion. The speakers were fantastic, especially his grandson," he told the BBC.

    "He was magnificent. It's not easy to go up and speak.

    "Bobby Charlton was a wonderful, humble man and I was at Manchester United because of Bobby Charlton."

    Speaking to Sky Sports, former Manchester United captain Steve Bruce said Sir Bobby was arguably "the greatest English footballer we've ever had" and a man who "oozed class".

    He said when he moved to Manchester United in 1987 Charlton made him feel at home and would sit with him over a cup of tea.

    Charlton's advice to him was simply: "It's a great club, just go and enjoy it."

    Former Manchester United chief executive David Gill told a very amusing story to the congregation.

    Sir Alex Ferguson liked to wind up Sir Bobby on trips by declaring between them they had 107 international caps.

    Charlton used to scoff at this. His contribution was 106.Manchester United was very much a theme of the occasion. Amidst the black suits and dresses, red scarves could be seen dotted around the cathedral.

    I also spotted a couple of actual Manchester United shirts.

    Among the service's various readings and tributes, one thing shone through - Sir Bobby always felt family came first.

    His grandson William Balderston spoke movingly about how Sir Bobby loved spending time with him, making up stories about make believe characters.

    It was a short and fairly simple service, but solemn nonetheless. Russell Watson, the opera singer, was one of those contributing while former Manchester United chief executive David Gill was one of those giving a reading and eulogy.

    Sir Bobby's wife, Lady Norma, his daughters Suzanne and Andrea were here and the cortege is now leaving on the other side of the cathedral.

    Manchester United's former 'Captain Marvel', Bryan Robson, earlier paid tribute to Sir Bobby.

    Robson said he was the first to welcome him to the club when he signed for a record fee in 1981.

    "I remember when I first joined the club, I was a record signing at the time and Sir Bob was the first one after I signed the contract to come and say it's a great club, enjoy yourself here," he said.

    "It's a sad day for the family, for Manchester United but also for football because he was a fantastic player.

    "But he wasn't just a great player, he was a great person, he had time for everyone and wanted to help everyone."

    People from across the UK and beyond gathered at Old Trafford earlier to say their final goodbyes to Sir Bobby.

    Garrett and Eimear McCarron, aged 45 and 11, came from Ireland to watch Manchester United’s game against Luton Town at the weekend and lingered a little longer for today.

    They stopped at Old Trafford earlier before heading back home.

    Garrett described Sir Bobby as "such a great player for the club" who "played for the badge".

    He said: "It's a historic occasion for Sir Bobby, he was just a great ambassador for Manchester United."

    John Matthews, 70, and Tim Evans, 69, live in North Wales but travelled to the ground.

    John described Sir Bobby as his "boyhood hero" who he "followed through his career". He said: "His character transcended football and made him world-famous, and respected by fans and fellow international players."

    Christine Wilde and Rita Farnan are from Manchester and also came to pay their respects.

    Christine described Sir Bobby as a "phenomenal player".

    "He was a prime example of how I think footballer should be today, he was a gentleman and a fantastic player," she said

    Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham is among those inside the private service.

    "People loved him," Mr Burnham earlier told the BBC.

    "That is because of the way he was. The true greats combine the highest of ability with great humility and that was Bobby.

    "Bobby had that humble approach, it made him approachable. Whenever I went around the world people would would want to talk about him. I think it is because he represented something right around the world, the ideal of what the English footballer could be. The footballer gentleman. He was a gentleman giant of this city, of the club of course but also of the country."

    He added: "We are here today to celebrate the greatest English footballer of all time. That is what Bobby Charlton was. He was the best player this country have ever seen."
