Former Manchester United player and teammate of Sir Bobby, Alex Stepney, has paid tribute to his friend, calling him a "great family man" and saying his success "never went to his head".

"My memory was meeting him for the first time when I got signed [at United]," Stepney told BBC News. "I knew straight away what a great guy he was, a humble guy.

"Nothing was over his head or anything like that, it was all about playing for Manchester United. Even on international duty it was about winning and that was what Bobby Charlton was all about. A humble guy, a great family man. It never went to his head."

When asked about what Charlton was like in the dressing room, Stepney said: "It didn't matter what the score was, at half-time he would say 'we can score four more'. That was Bobby. He was a winner. He never wanted to be a loser. He was an absolute winner - let's be honest he scored some great goals to win games."

Over the course of his 17-year career Sir Bobby Charlton lifted trophies, won awards, broke records and thoroughly earned his status as a legend of the beautiful game.

During his time at Manchester United he recorded 758 appearances and 249 goals, and joined the Red Devils in winning three league titles, one FA Cup and a European Cup.

His finest hour at club level came in May 1968 when he captained United to European Cup success at Wembley, scoring twice in the 4-1 win over Benfica.

He famously missed the post-match celebrations to conduct a solitary remembrance for the friends he had lost in the Munich air disaster 10 years earlier.

From 1958 to 1970 he played for England, and achieved 106 caps, a record-breaking 49 goals, the famous 1966 World Cup win, and a Ballon d’Or.

Charlton of course also played a starring role in England's famous 1966 World Cup-winning team.

Under Sir Alf Ramsey's management, he scored twice in the semi-final win over Portugal. England then beat West Germany 4-2 in extra time to take the trophy at Wembley.

Following his retirement, Sir Bobby went on to serve at Manchester United as a director for 39 years, and his legacy lives on through the life-changing work of the Sir Bobby Charlton Foundation, external.

Manchester Cathedral is where the service itself will be held - the scene of some of the city's most solemn ceremonies in recent years.

Just last month, Manchester City bid farewell to one of its own sporting heroes, Francis Lee, in an emotional service there.

At 14:00 about 1,000 invited guests including members of Manchester United's 1968 European Cup-winning team, players from the current first-team squad and leading sporting figures will take their places inside.

The ceremony, which will not be filmed or broadcast, will include eulogies and tributes from former United chief executive David Gill, former Manchester United Foundation chief executive John Shiels and a personal tribute from Charlton's family.

Hymns will include Abide With Me, which is traditionally sung before the FA Cup final, Jerusalem and a rendition of How Great Thou Art by opera singer Russell Watson.

  12. Stormy weather in store for funeral processionpublished at 12:05 Greenwich Mean Time 13 November 2023

    Simon King
    BBC weather presenter and meteorologist

It's been a blustery autumn morning so far in Manchester with leaves blowing in the wind, but as the funeral procession gets underway we could see the winds strengthen a bit further due to Storm Debi.

Wind gusts of around 40mph have been observed in Manchester but they could peak at around 50-60mph for a short time. As a result the Met Office has issued yellow severe weather warning that covers Greater Manchester until 18:00.

For those paying their respects though, the better news it that the heavy rain experienced this morning has cleared away to the north so at least there will be some sunny spells with only a small chance of a passing shower.

One of the most enduring images of Sir Bobby's life is the "Holy Trinity" statue outside Old Trafford - and it is likely to be a natural focal point for today's tributes.

Charlton stands proudly alongside former teammates and fellow United legends George Best and Denis Law.

The work of sculptor Philip Jackson, it was unveiled on 29 May 2008 in a ceremony that celebrated 40 years since the club lifted the European Cup for the first time.

While the funeral itself will be attended by the great and good of the football world, thousands of fans are expected to line the streets to pay their own tributes.

Old Trafford in particular is braced for large crowds. A sea of floral tributes were left at the stadium after Sir Bobby's death.

The funeral will be a celebration both of his "incredible life" as a family man, and "one of the finest footballers this country has ever produced", Manchester United said.

The service at the cathedral will remain private and will not be filmed or broadcast.
