For a good few months it’s a time consuming process and life does tend to revolve around the chicks’ feeding schedule but it’s ever-so-rewarding to see them go on and fledge.

Wardens at the RSPB's Dee Estuary site have been trying to work out how many of the tiny mammals live on the nature reserve, but because the animals are so small and secretive, that was proving difficult.

Counting their ball-shaped nests seemed like the ideal solution, which led warden Alasdair Grubb to make use of a "trick that’s been used with balls from Wimbledon for years", drilling a hole in an old tennis ball, which can be easily seen in the dense vegetation.

He has put balls donated by Neston Cricket Club's tennis section around the reserve, which means "next summer, I’ll be able to revisit each tennis ball and see whether it has been used as a nest", he says.
