    Speaking to the Liverpool Echo at the family home in Kensington, his mother Karla demanded to know what had caused her son to die.

    She said the 18-year-old had left her home fit and healthy on Wednesday lunchtime.  

    She said her "gentle giant" son had no pre-existing medical conditions.

    An 18-year-old man who died after being arrested by police following an "incident" at the Liverpool One shopping centre has been named in the Liverpool Echo, external as Mzee Mohammed.

    Mr Mohammed, from Kensington, became “unwell” after the incident on Wednesday.

    He died at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital.

    Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson has released a statement following the death of an 18-year-old man who had been arrested by Merseyside Police.

    He said: “I am very saddened by the news of the death of this young man last night.  

    "I am pleased to see that the police have referred themselves to the IPCC, as they should, and that there will be a full investigation into the circumstances around the incident.  

    "I will make sure that all information related to this investigation is shared with the family in a spirit of full openness."

    The Independent Police Complaints Commission has released a statement following the death of an 18-year-old in police custody in Liverpool.

    The watchdog said it had begun an independent investigation following what it described as an "incident" at Liverpool One shopping centre yesterday evening.

    “The man subsequently became unwell and was taken by ambulance to a local hospital where he later died," the statement said.

    “IPCC investigators were deployed following notification of the incident and have been overseeing examination of the scene and the post incident procedure. Formal identification is yet to take place."

    Police forces are legally obliged to report any deaths in custody to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).

    Merseyside Police did so shortly after 20:00 BST on Wednesday, and the IPCC immediately deployed officers to the scene.

    The vast majority of deaths in custody are investigated by the IPCC.

    An MP said she hopes "lessons will be learned" from a report into a Liverpool health trust that was strongly criticised for a culture of bullying and failing services.

    West Lancashire MP Rosie Cooper spoke out at a Westminster debate discussing an independent report into Liverpool Community Health NHS Trust. 

    It criticised senior managers and the board for either covering up problems or failing to notice them at all. 

    The trust, which runs medical services including walk-in centres across the region, has previously apologised and says changes have been made.

    Ms Cooper called for a public inquiry, and the government said it was commissioning a clinical review.

    A campaign has been launched to secure £1bn of rail improvements for north Wales and Cheshire to help link the region with the planned HS2 line.

    The investment would create 70,000 new jobs over 20 years, according to an alliance of business, political and public sector leaders.

    If successful, the Growth-track 360 campaign would see a link with the planned HS2 line between London and the north of England, new services, improvements to stations and cheaper journey planning.

    Last month a coroner ruled that the inquests will reopen into the deaths of the 21 people killed in 1974, saying a "wealth of evidence" hadn't been heard.

    Elkan Abrahamson, from Broudie Jackson Canter, says without the support of then Home Secretary Theresa May, they wouldn't have been able to fund the families during the Hillsborough Inquests.

    A man has appeared in court accused of sending offensive emails to Liverpool Wavertree MP Luciana Berger, including one containing the threat "you are going to get it like Jo Cox did".

    John Nimmo, 28, from South Shields has been charged with sending a message "causing anxiety or distress" to the MP.

    In a statement Ms Berger said threatening behaviour "threatens democracy, and intimidation of any kind should not be tolerated". 

    Since her election in 2010, Ms Berger has been the target of anti-Semitic abuse online. In 2014 she told the BBC she'd received 2,500 thousand abusive tweets in just three days.
