  4. Delayed rail work 'to begin in 2017'published at 17:43 British Summer Time 10 August 2016

    Delayed work to upgrade the railway line between Wrexham and Chester will start in March.

    The project, which will see the track double between Rossett and Saltney junction, was given the go-ahead in October 2013 and originally set to be finished by 2015.

    North Wales AM Mark Isherwood said: "I am delighted that a date has now been given, although it is disappointing it has taken so long."

    Network Rail has been asked to comment.

  5. Police investigate suspected gang shootingpublished at 17:37 British Summer Time 10 August 2016

    Merseyside Police are investigating a suspected shooting in Kirkby earlier between "two groups of males".

    A force spokesman said the force received calls about an incident in Mossdale Road at about 14:00.

    Officers believe a gun was fired but the suspects had fled by the time patrols arrived.

    House-to-house inquiries are taking place.

    Campaigners are staging a protest against the Sun newspaper outside Tesco in Liverpool's Hanover Street.

    A spokesman for the group, called Total Eclipse of the Sun, said they are opposed to the tabloid following its controversial coverage of the Hillsborough disaster.

    The father of a former soldier from Merseyside being held in jail in India is calling for the new Foreign Secretary to do more to get his son back home.

    Paul Towers is one of six Britons who were jailed for carrying guns while working for an anti-piracy company in the Indian Ocean in 2013. 

    His father wants Boris Johnson to intervene.

    Labour's newly-elected candidate in the Liverpool City Region Mayor race has said there is "no other job" he would quit being an MP for.

    Steve Rotheram, who will resign as MP for Liverpool Walton if he wins the election in May, said he was attracted by the "devolution" powers of the mayoral role.

    "Everybody knows how passionate I am about Liverpool and the city region, so it seemed like an obvious fir for me," he added.

    A groundbreaking trial which could see prostate cancer patients receive their treatment in just five days is being carried out at the Clatterbridge Centre in Wirral.

    Patients currently have to undergo around eight weeks of treatment, but doctors are now looking at whether five radiotherapy sessions could be as effective as surgery.

    An investigation is underway after shots were fired at a house in Netherton.

    Officers were called to Waterside just after 23:00 last night, Merseyside Police said.

    Damage was caused to the front door of a property, but no-one was injured. 

    Patrols have been stepped up in the area.

    Karen Bradley was in the city yesterday, where she made her maiden speech at the Philharmonic Hall. 

    Last week the Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson said he had written to the government outlining the city's intention - and said a formal bid could take a year to prepare. 

    Ms Bradley said she's seen "first hand" the difference the games made to Glasgow and Manchester.

    Steve Rotheram's victory in Liverpool further strengthens Jeremy Corbyn's grip on the Labour party.

    He's a parliamentary aide to the Labour leader who was one of the first to congratulate him.

    Jon Lansman, of the grassroots Momentum campaign which supports Mr Corbyn, said the result was a "victory for democracy".

    Mr Rotheram won almost 60% of the vote in the second round to secure Labour's nomination.

    Given Labour's grip on local politics, he's almost certain to become the first elected mayor of the Liverpool City Region, giving Mr Corbyn an important ally in a powerful devolved role.

    The new mayor will oversee transport, planning, post-16 education and wield a £900m investment fund.

    Three senior staff at Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust are to face disciplinary hearings after being suspended over whistleblowing claims.

    The trust would not confirm which staff would faced the hearings, but said one person had no case to answer and would return to work.
