  2. Analysis: What does mayoral nomination mean for Liverpool mayor Joe Anderson?published at 12:51 British Summer Time 10 August 2016

    Claire Hamilton
    Reporter, BBC Radio Mersesyide

Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson had made no secret of his desire to be Metro Mayor. After all, it was he who lobbied hard for the role to be created in the first place.

    Joe Anderson

Now left "heartbroken" following MP Steve Rotheram's nomination, he will remain in his current role after being re-elected for a second term in May.

There is a possibility that in February 2017, Liverpool City Council could vote to abolish the role of city mayor.

But that would require a two thirds of members voting for the council to change the system.

If it did happen, it would mean a return to the old system of council leader and cabinet.

Meanwhile, Mr Rotheram has said he would continue in his current roles, both as MP for Walton and as Jeremy Corbyn’s parliamentary private secretary “for the time being”.
