    Seven charities are to share £1.6m of Big Lottery funds to help disadvantaged young people into work.

    Project leaders The Matthew Project, external, along with YMCA Norfolk, external, ACE, external, NANSA, external, Norwich and Central Norfolk Mind, external, Gyros, external and the Princes' Trust, external, have secured the money from the Building Better Opportunities programme, which is supported by the Big Lottery Fund.

    It's the first time the charities have worked together on such a large sale, and they say the funding will create up to 12 new jobs.

    The aim is to help improve the lives of young people who face severe barriers into education, training and employment.

  2. First gas from new field flows into Bactonpublished at 15:53 Greenwich Mean Time 15 December 2016

    Gas from a major new field off Norfolk has started to flow through the Bacton terminal.

    The Cygnus field is the biggest discovery of gas, external in the southern North Sea for 25 years. It's expected to contribute 5% of UK gas production... enough energy to heat 1.5m homes.

    The Cygnus complex, of four platforms, 10 wells and two sub-sea structures, serves an estimated field size of 250 sq km, and is expected to achieve production of 250m cubic feet per day. It has an estimated production life of more than 20 years.

    Police are investigating the unexplained death of a man in Thetford.

    Officers were called to a garage block in Durham Way shortly after 18:00 on Monday.

    They'd been called by paramedics who'd found the man motionless on the ground. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

    A post-mortem examination eld yesterday was inconclusive. A man who was arrested and questioned in relation to the incident has been released on police bail, while inquiries continue.

    Norfolk Police say the incident is not being linked to the death of a woman at Frobisher Way, Thetford, on the same day.

  6. Rail disruption likely until 17:00published at 14:49 Greenwich Mean Time 15 December 2016

    Greater Anglia says disruption to rail services, external to and from Norwich station is likely to continue until 17:00.

    A fault with the signalling system means trains are running at reduced speed on some lines. Network Rail Engineers are on site and, working to resolve the problem.

    The following services have been cancelled:

    • 1530: Liverpool Street to Norwich
    • 1612: Cambridge to Norwich
    • 1630: Liverpool Street to Norwich

  7. Pub owner sentenced over bouncy castle safety issuespublished at 14:18 Greenwich Mean Time 15 December 2016

    The owner of a waterside Broads pub has been sentenced for two breaches of health and safety law.

    Officers from North Norfolk District Council carried out an inspection at the Ferry Inn, Horning, external, on 1 April 2016, following concerns from a member of the public about the safety of play equipment.

    They found an inflatable bouncy castle was not tethered to the ground, and hoops to do so were damaged. 

    The court heard prosecutors say it was a week after the death of a young girl from Norfolk at a fairground tragedy in Essex

    There were also dangers around other play equipment, including exposed electrics, nails and screws.

    Ian Chinn, 55, who had purchased the inflatable on eBay, had not questioned its integrity, the court heard. 

    He pleaded guilty to both charges at Norwich Magistrates' Court and was given an 18-week jail sentence, suspended for a year.  He was also ordered to pay costs of £1,785.

    There were no reports of anyone being injured on the play equipment.

    Train services running to and from Norwich, external station may be cancelled or delayed by up to 30 minutes.

    Greater Anglia says this is due to a fault with the signalling system. It's affecting rail travel between Norwich and London Liverpool Street, and between Norwich and Cambridge.

    The disruption is expected to continue until 14:30.

    These services have been cancelled:

    • 13:00 Norwich to London
    • 13:12 Cambridge to Norwich
    • 14:12 Cambridge to Norwich
    • 14:30 London to Norwich
    • 15:30 London to Norwich

    Children at a south Norfolk had a special Christmas treat yesterday.

    Norwich City captain Russell Martin and team-mate Steven Whittaker dropped into the East Anglia's Children's Hospices, external (EACH) Quidenham hospice to meet the families and youngsters who receive care from the charity.

    The players signed autographs, answering questions about the club and their careers, and handed out Norwich City goody bags.

    Peter Maxey, care manager at Quidenham, says it was "a special day... every year our families and young people are so thrilled to meet the players... we really do appreciate it especially at this special time of year".

    signalling problem, external near Norwich is still causing delays of up to 20 minutes on journeys between Ely and Norwich.

    National Rail says it expects some services to be cancelled, and the disruption could continue for longer than it first thought.

    It first stated that everything would be back to normal by 12:30, but that time has now been pushed back to 14:30.

  19. Jailed for creating false dating website profile for ex-partnerpublished at 11:22 Greenwich Mean Time 15 December 2016

    A man has been jailed for 16 weeks, for posting an explicit image of his former partner online, and creating a false dating profile for her.

    Carl Muir, 33, of Victory Avenue in Poringland, appeared at Norwich magistrates court and had pleaded guilty to the offences.

    As well as the prison sentence, Muir was issued with a restraining order prohibiting him from contacting his former partner, from going near her home in the Southwold area (pictured), sending any images of her online, or retaining any intimate photographs.

    He was also ordered to pay costs of £300, and compensation of £500.

    Cub Scout Dylan came to the rescue, when the Duchess of Cambridge "injured" her arm, during party celebrations at North Wootton Scout hut last night.

    After the mock-up, she thanked the youngster and exchanged a high five with him.

    Dylan says the Duchess, who lives at Anmer on the Sandringham estate, was "really kind and delightful... exactly how I expected her to be, it was a pleasure for her to be here".

    The Duchess had previously demonstrated her first aid abilities, putting a sling on the arm of young Cub Ben, who was full of praise: "She was very good... obviously had training from Prince William."

    Another activity involved the youngsters writing something positive about themselves on a piece of card to be displayed, to promote emotional well-being and resilience. 

    Their royal visitor's answer could prompt an invitation to any future Guy Fawkes celebrations:
