  1. North Runcton fire: The latest informationpublished at 10:16 Greenwich Mean Time 26 January 2017

    Environmental officers are making daily visits to a timber yard fire in North Runcton to assess the impact of smoke on the local community.

    The fire broke out shortly before midday on Saturday (pictured) and firefighters remain on site, overseeing a controlled burn, which could take up to 14 days due to the amount of wood involved.

    The water run-off is being monitored by the Environment Agency, and to date there's no pollution to local rivers and ground water.

    Chequers Lane will remain closed until further notice.

    Residents are advised to avoid being in the smoke plume and to avoid contact with smoke deposits near to the site. They're also advised to keep windows and doors shut, and to avoid spending unnecessary time outdoors.

    Motorists who have to travel through the smoke plume should keep windows and air vents closed, and turn off the air conditioning.

    Anyone with health concerns is advised to contact their GP or the NHS 111 service.

    Suffolk's Katherine Rednall is through to her third singles final at the World Indoor Bowls Championships, external.

    The 21-year-old from Baylham beat Amy Stanton 8-3, 8-4 in Hopton-on-Sea last night. 

    Rednall, who won the event in 2014 and was runner-up 12 months later, will face defending champion Ellen Falkner in today's final.

    All train services between Norwich and Great Yarmouth have been cancelled.

    Greater Anglia, external says the disruption is due to an operating incident at Norwich. Replacement buses, external will be running along the route. 

    Disruption is expected until 12:00.

    Services between Norwich and London Liverpool Street are not affected.

    Norfolk Fire Service say it could take up to 14 days before a fire at a wood scrap yard in west Norfolk is finally out.

    The blaze at the timber yard in North Runcton broke out shortly before midday on Saturday.

    The father of the Basildon man whose suicide in Chelmsford jail highlighted 'serious failings' in the prison system says the government is being forced to take the crisis in our prisons seriously.

    Dean Saunders was on remand for stabbing his father Mark, during a what was described as a paranoid episode. 

    Yesterday the justice minister Liz Truss outlined her plans during a debate in the Commons.

    Mr Saunders warned: "It is all very well making pledges and promises, but we want deadlines and results.

    "Previous reports showed a clear pattern [of behaviour]. There've been recommendations but they weren't acted upon."

    He said the government was acting like the current problems were "a surprise, when it's been slowly festering for years".

    Cantley's Alfie Hewett and his partner Gustavo Fernandez are through to the wheelchair doubles final at the Australian Open.

    The pair beat the reigning Paralympic gold medallists Stephane Houdet and Nicolas Peifer in three sets this morning.

    Yesterday's win for Hewett sets up a final against Reid who has a new partner - Joachim Gerard of Belgium.

    A Conservative councillor has stepped down after a video of him making lewd comments to an anti-hunt protestor emerged. 

    The footage showed Charles Carter telling the woman that he'd like to "take her to bed" and asking for her number before riding off with the hunt.

    Yesterday Mr Carter, who represented the Saham Toney ward on Breckland Council, external, was suspended from the Conservative group pending a full investigation.

    Last night he resigned, and his resignation has been accepted by the Conservative leader of the council William Nunn.

    Norfolk has a higher than average suicide rate and today agencies met to try and reduce those numbers.

    The statistics, external show that on average 77 people are taking their lives each year in the county. 

    A third of these people are aged 45-59, are male and living in deprived areas. 

    Between 2013 and 2015, 12.4 of every 100,000 people took their own lives in Norfolk, compared to 10.1 in England and 9.3 in the east of England region. 

    The new county-wide strategy, external aims to reduce the number of deaths by 10%, in-line with the government's target.

    The action plan aims to: 

    • Reduce the risk of suicide in key high-risk groups
    • Tailor approaches to improve mental health in specific groups 
    • Reduce access to the means of suicide 
    • Provide better information and support to those bereaved or affected by suicide 
    • Support research, data collection and monitoring 
    • Support the media in delivering sensitive approaches to suicide and suicidal behaviour

    Vicky Ford MEP (Conservative, East of England) has today been re-elected chairman of the European Parliament's influential Internal Market and Consumer Affairs Committee (IMCO).

    Mrs Ford first became chairman in 2014 and was re-elected unopposed. She will hold the post until the end of the current parliament, in May 2019.

    Mrs Ford hopes she will be able to help keep Brexit talks "amicable".  

    "The IMCO Committee looks at the practical elements of removing barriers to trade across Europe," she said. "I hope that many of these practical co-operation networks will continue for both the UK and the rest of the EU post-Brexit.

    "Re-confirming a UK Conservative in this important role confirms my view that many across Europe wish to maintain a close co-operative partnership with the UK, minimise barriers to trade and keep an amicable and open dialogue during all negotiations, including those on Brexit."
