    Here's your chance to have your say on plans to improve the area between Great Yarmouth's rail station and Market Place.

    Norfolk County Council is spending £2m over the next two years to make the route between the two more attractive and safer for pedestrians and cyclists.

    It's asking for people's views, external on the proposals and will be holding drop-in sessions in the town over the next fortnight.

    The public consultation will close on Monday, 13 March, with construction work due to begin in late autumn.

  3. Norwich to host exhibition by acclaimed artistpublished at 16:39 Greenwich Mean Time 16 February 2017

    Acclaimed artist Nina Mae Fowler is to exhibit in Norwich next month.

    "The Day Cary Came to Norwich" exhibition at The Fairhurst Gallery, external depicts an imaginary scenario of a mature Cary Grant enjoying the sights and sounds of the city.

    At the age of 14, the actor made a fleeting visit to Norwich to perform at the Hippodrome with an acrobatic group.

    Ms Fowler has been nominated for several awards, including the BP Portrait Prize and the Jerwood Drawing Prize.

    Her work is held in both public and private collections in the UK,  Europe and USA, and is collected by a number of celebrities, including Sienna Miller, Jude Law and James Purefoy.

    The IPCC has issued a statement following the death of Paul Gladwell, 38, (pictured) of Colchester who died after an incident at Pontins holiday camp on the Suffolk coast.

    IPCC commissioner Cindy Butts said: "Our thoughts are with the man’s relatives and friends at this difficult time. 

    "Our investigators will be conducting a thorough inquiry into all the circumstances surrounding his interaction with the police."

  6. Charity raises issue of links between bereavement and youth offendingpublished at 15:43 Greenwich Mean Time 16 February 2017

    The justice secretary, Liz Truss, is visiting the Nelson's Journey charity, external to learn about its work.

    The charity, based at Little Plumstead near Norwich, provides help for bereaved children in Norfolk. It's seen an increased demand for services over the last year.

    The charity says young people who are affected by death are at greater risk of developing harmful behaviour, which can lead to criminal offending in some cases, and theses issues will be discussed with the MP, who represents South West Norfolk.

    Ms Truss will also meet teenage volunteers.

    The Independent Police Complaints Commission says its investigation is under way and a team has "attended the scene" following the death of Paul Gladwell.

    They were talking to people who were at Pontins on Tuesday, 14 Febuary and they were gathering CCTV footage.

    It said Mr Gladwell's family had been informed.

  10. Man dies after incident at Pontins holiday camppublished at 14:07 Greenwich Mean Time 16 February 2017

    The Independent Police Complaints Commission is confirming that it is investigating the arrest and subsequent death of a man at Pontins's Pakefield Holiday Park.

    A spokesman says the dead man is Paul Gladwell, 38, from Colchester.

    The statement says he was "initially detained by staff at Pontins" at about 23:40 on Tuesday and subsequently arrested by Suffolk Police on suspicion of assault.

    While being taken to Great Yarmouth Police Investigation Centre "officers became concerned for his wellbeing, stopped the van and contacted an ambulance".

    He was treated at the scene and then taken to the James Paget Hospital in Gorleston where he was pronounced dead earlier today.

    A love of birdwatching helped Joe Harkness recover from a mental breakdown three years ago, and he's now hoping to turn his enthusiasm into providing help for vulnerable people.

    As a child, Joe's granddad had pointed out birds to him, but he'd never followed it up as an interest. Following his breakdown, Joe went out walking and started to notice things.

    "Being outside was good for me... the attention I was paying on birds enabled me to switch-off from what was happening in my life."

    He realised other people shared his interest in "birding" and has been writing a blog, external for two years, and a book for a year.

    Joe, who lives in Reepham, works in a school for those excluded from mainstream education, and is thinking about ways he can help people. 

    He'd like to set up bird feeding projects in care homes to help those with dementia, and offer a service to schools, by taking young people out on birdwatching walks.

  15. Scrap wood fire 'in final stages'published at 12:28 Greenwich Mean Time 16 February 2017

    A fire at a timber yard in west Norfolk is now in the final stages of a "controlled burn".

    The blaze, at the North Runcton scrap wood site broke out shortly before midday on Saturday, 21 January (pictured below). 

    It's expected to smoulder for up to two weeks longer, and residents are warned they may see some vapour during this time.

    At its peak, 50 firefighters were on site tackling the fire in around 40,000 cubic metres of waste timber.  

    The site has now been returned to the occupier.

    A multi-agency investigation is ongoing into the cause of the blaze. When the ash is completely cold, it will be tested to determine the impact on the local environment and community.

    Police were called to Pontins holiday camp in Suffolk at 23:45 on Tuesday, where a man in his late-30s had been detained by staff after an incident at a bar.

    The man, believed to be from the Colchester area, was then arrested on suspicion of assault. 

    Police say he became unwell while being taken to Great Yarmouth Police Investigation Centre in a police van, and is now in the James Paget Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition. 

    Suffolk Police say they're investigating what happened and have referred the incident to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

    We've approached Pontins for a comment, but so far have not had a response.

    Mental health services in Great Yarmouth don't have the capacity to support young people when they need it, according to the principal of Great Yarmouth College, external.

    It's seen a 150% increase in mental health referrals in 2015-16, and nearly a 190% increase in self-harming. There's never been a tougher time to be a 16 to 18-year-old, says Stuart Rimmer.

    "There are difficulties for some in finding future employment... and social media is a real challenge for a young person nowadays."

    Mr Rimmer has written to the Times Educational Supplement, urging those in education to be pro-active when it comes to helping students.

    His staff do interventions on a daily basis, and catching things early has huge benefits, with a student more likely to stay on course.
