A scheme called Pub is the Hub was set up in 2001 to give improvement grants to pubs.

The money has been used to set up shops, cafe's, libraries and post offices within pubs in communities where these services have closed down.

Its national chief executive John Longden says that Norfolk has been "phenomenal" in leading the way.

Amelia Nicholson is the landlady at the Brisley Bell Inn, near Fakenham.

She took on the pub in 2015 to provide a base for the community and says they offer something for everyone in the village, including supporting a fete and a small library.

"Pubs are an essential way of bringing together rural life. Somewhere like Brisley doesn't have a village shop.

"We have a lovely village hall but it's not open all the time but the pub is and it's a place where people can gather," she said.

The Wat Arun Norfolk UK temple was officially opened in a living room in a house in Hellesdon last year.

But Broadland District Council has now served an eviction notice on the house, after saying the activity had exceeded the authorised use of the home.

The council says it's working with the temple-goers to find another suitable property, but anywhere they find will have to have planning permission for religious use.

  9. UKIP says 'ends justify the means' in North Norfolk decisionpublished at 13:53 British Summer Time 10 May 2017

    Mariam Issimdar
    BBC News

UKIP's former candidate for north Norfolk, who announced yesterday that he won't be contesting a third general election, has been explaining why he's giving his support to the Conservative candidate.

Michael Baker is hoping the Tories will beat the Liberal Democrat incumbent Norman Lamb.

Norman Lamb, Lib Dem candidate North Norfolk

Mr Baker says he's convinced of James Wild's Brexit credentials and wants to 'lend' his 8,000 votes to the Tories:

"I've spent the last 10 years doing everything I can to get out of Europe and get our country back.

"There comes a time when you have to decide what is the best way of doing this. The ends justify the means so let's get rid of another pro-European MP."

UKIP lost all its county council seats in North Norfolk to the Liberal Democrats last week.

The Lib Dems' election agent Ed Maxfield says voters in the district won't be ordered about by a party that hasn't won before and isn't standing now:

"Most voters in North Norfolk don't really like being told what to do. Not everyone who votes UKIP or has voted UKIP in the past is actually voting on the issue of Europe.

"We're quite happy to be standing on Norman Lamb's excellent record as a constituency MP to be honest."

It follows on from a pledge to "stand up to the politics of hatred and division" in the general election.

Jonathan Bartley, the joint leader of the Green Party, has been telling BBC Radio Norfolk's Nick Conrad that too many are shirking the tax issue.

"Whoever wins the general election, taxes are going to go up.

"What we are saying is 'let's have that conversation, let's admit it and let's say whose taxes are going to go up'.

"It should not be those of the poorest, it should be those of the richest."

  12. Falcons bred to tackle pigeon populationpublished at 10:57 British Summer Time 10 May 2017

    Mariam Issimdar
    BBC News

Falcons are being bred by a company in Snetterton to help tackle the pigeon and gull populations in town centres.

The birds will also be used by companies that operate landfill sites.

    Falcon and eggs

NBC Environment says the birds are natural predators of pigeons and gulls.

The birds take about nine weeks to train. They learn to return to their trainer at the end of an "operation" or day's work.

Head of falconry Andy Hulme said: "The birds we breed here are going to be quite large falcons so somewhere like an industrial site or landfill site where they have big issues with large herring gulls or lesser black backs, you need a big intimidating bird, so falcons are ideal".

Mrs Tolley, who lives near Dereham, will appear on BBC's Panorama programme tonight.

She now has cirrhosis of the liver as a result and only found out she had Hepatitis C in 2015 after spending years being ill.

She says it's affected her whole family's life and she wants to know why she was given the infected blood.

"We want an inquiry. People need to be told why we were infected. I want to know why I was given that blood. It's absolutely destroyed my life and I'm absolutely livid," she said.
