    A man's in police custody after bomb squad officers were called to a house in Norwich yesterday.

    The 23-year-old was arrested after a grenade and four firearms were found in Clifton Street near Old Palace Road.

    Police say the firearms were deactivated.

    A public meeting is being held tonight to discuss a possible merger of two primary schools in Great Yarmouth.

    The £7 million project would see Alderman Swindell School, external (pictured) close, and its pupils move to a new building on the current site of North Denes Primary, external.

    Plans are moving forward despite a county council consultation on the merger showing a majority against the move.

    Alison Hopley, head at Alderman Swindell, wants to keep the school as it is: "We believe we've got something unique here and that parents have the option of a single form entry school with very much a family feel.

    "We have the highest attendance rate of all schools in Great Yarmouth and no exclusions here."

    Norwich City face a tough trip in the last 16 of the League Cup, after being drawn at Arsenal yesterday.

    The Gunners narrowly defeated League One side Doncaster 1-0 last night, making Norwich the lowest ranked side left in the competition.

    City beat Brentford 3-1 on Tuesday to progress to Round 4, with summer signing Mario Vrancic scoring two.

    A charity which has been helping carers for more than 25 years may have to close, because its funding from Norfolk County Council has been cut by £53,000, and the contract it had with the council has been given to another provider.

    The sum represents a 20% reduction for West Norfolk Carers, external.

    Janice Moseley from Dersingham was helped by Sue from the charity when her husband George went into a home for respite care.

    She said: "It broke George's heart to be in the care home, and it broke my heart to see how he was.

    "Neither of us could take any more, and Sue got everything sorted out for us, and got him home."

    A West Norfolk charity which has been helping carers for more than 25 years may have to close because of changes in Norfolk County Council commissioning.

    West Norfolk Carers received a fifth of its income from the county council in the past.

    But now the contract for work they do has been given to a Norwich based provider, and it means they will lose £53,000.

    The charity provides unpaid carers with support and advice to overcome any financial, emotional or physical challenges they face.

  15. Inquests open into Sandringham plane crash pairpublished at 15:15 British Summer Time 20 September 2017

    Inquests have been opened and adjourned into the deaths of two people from the North East who were in a light aircraft that crashed on the Queen's Sandringham Estate.

    Pilot Nigel Dodds, 58 and friend Val Barnes, both from Gateshead, were killed when the plane came down near Wolferton on 11 September.

    They were flying from Menorca to Newcastle when they got into difficulty.

    Senior coroner Jacqueline Lake told Norfolk Coroner's Court the plane ended up near Wolferton pumping station and both occupants, who were identified by dental records, died from multiple injuries.

    A pre-inquest review into the deaths will take place in Norwich on 5 March.

    Boats have been stolen and set adrift in the Norfolk Broads.

    In Barton Turf three boats were untied and an outboard engine was stolen overnight, between 15 and 16 September.

    A number of items were also taken from a premises at Ludham Bridge on the same night. Keys for a vehicle, an iPad and cash were among the items pinched.

    A day later, a white rowing boat was stolen from the river bank at Thurne, near to the windmill.

    Norfolk Police has asked for people with information to come forward.

    It also said people should check on their boats regularly and sign up to Boatshield, external to protect their property.
