  13. Record year for rare waderspublished at 11:20 British Summer Time 20 July 2017

It's a record year for the rare black-winged stilts, the RSPB has said.

This year has seen 13 of the black and white, pink-legged, waders fledging at sites across Norfolk, Cambridgeshire and Kent - that's more than the total between 1983 and 2016. In the 22 nesting attempts by the long-legged birds in that time, only three fledged young.

For the first time, the stilts have nested at the Ouse Washes reserve, external. When rapidly rising water levels posed a threat to the birds, reserve staff raised the stilts' nest to prevent it from becoming flooded.

Most commonly found in southern Europe, they were once an extremely rare visitor to the UK, but in recent years numbers have increased.

Jonathan Taylor, senior site manager at the Ouse Washes, says the birds like to nest in shallow lagoons and salt pans in the Mediterranean, so they've tried to create habitat to match this in the hope of attracting more of the black-winged stilts.

The waders arrive from late March onwards, and do a "tour de Britain" before settling on their breeding site.

As soon as they start laying eggs, RSPB wardens are deployed to guard the nest around the clock, and the locations are kept secret to protect them until the chicks hatch.
