Fen Line Users, West Norfolk borough council and the King's Lynn Business Improvement District say the new timetables being put forward by Govia Thameslink Railway, run by Great Northern, are slower and promises of more trains have been broken.

Andy Tyler, from the Fen Line Users' Association, said: "The main concern is slightly longer journey times, a great source of irritation to commuters but also the length of time it is taking to make improvements to the Fen Line, which are well overdue."

A spokesman for Great Northern said: "Our timetable proposals reflect the need for a minor increase in dwell times at stations and to improve performance on the single line tracks between King's Lynn and Cambridge.

"The wider infrastructure challenges in the region are being addressed through the Ely area task force and £8.8m of funding was confirmed in March for a feasibility study of proposed major infrastructure upgrade works in the region."

If our winters become milder in future we may see them over-wintering in England more frequently, the BTO said.

While academic progress at Wayland Academy is acknowledged, the report, external painted a worrying picture about behaviour.

Inspectors spoke to pupils who mentioned feeling unsafe, concerns over bullying, bad language and homophobia.

The team also found that too many lessons were still being disrupted by bad behaviour and poor work submitted by students wasn't always challenged.

Principal Glen Allott says new measures had been introduced to tackle the concerns.

"These include intensive monitoring and intervention for students with poor attendance, new ways for parents and students to report behaviour concerns to senior staff... and workshops and training to raise awareness of radicalisation and extremism."

He added: "Our students achieved the academy's best ever results last summer, initiatives to improve literacy are making a real difference, and the high aspirations we encourage for students are matched by excellent progression into further education, employment and training."

    Radar image of lightning strikes

There were more than 26,000 lightning strikes over the East of England last night, with some properties damaged by the storms.

The conditions also caused power cuts and disruption to rail services because of damage to overhead lines.

But why was there so much lightning?

"Thunderstorms are made when the air goes up quickly, and very warm air at the surface with cold air above it allowed the warm air to rise violently over a large area, creating these huge storms," said Jake Cope from the BBC Weather Centre.

"They were so long-lived because many of the thunderstorms started 'back-building'.

"This is where the wind pushing the system along bumps into air flowing out of the rear of the storm and is again forced upwards, sustaining the rear edge of the cloud."
