Back in 2013 an agreement was reached for Northampton Borough Council to loan the Cobblers £12m to redevelop Sixfields stadium. The final loan figure was £10.25m.
In March 2014 work started on the East stand, but it was halted five months later and despite promises is yet to restart.
At the end of June this year Northampton Town chairman David Cardoza announced the club was in talks to be taken over by an Indian consortium.
Then in September, with little movement in the takeover, Northampton Borough Council gave today's deadline to repay the £10.25m loan.
On Monday the Indian consortium to withdrew its interest in the club.
And today HM Revenue and Customs issued Northampton Town with a winding-up petition.

I've been speaking to Guy Thomas of solicitors Taylor Walton who says 'Northampton Town Football Club Limited' can not be sold while there is a winding -up petition against it.
He told me, however, that shares in it can be sold - although this is unlikely.
Mr Thomas also said while the winding-up petition is active, assets are frozen and, unless the bank makes an application to the court to access funds, players and staff will have to be paid by a third party or not at all.
