  2. Waste plant for Northampton to be considered by councilpublished at 17:52

    Plans for a new waste to energy plant, external on land owned by Northampton Borough Council will be discussed tonight. 

    The authority has been approached for a plant to be built on land at the Westbridge Depot on St James' Mill Road.

    It's recommended the council's cabinet proceeds with plans to lease part of the site out so the plant can be built.

    Higher Education students say it’s more convenient being able to study a degree-level course at their local college, rather than go away to university.

    It follows figures that show Tresham College, external has repeatedly missed its targets for recruiting Higher Education students. 

    Nicola Piggott, who is studying a Performing Arts HND at Tresham in Kettering, said: “It means you don’t have to uproot if you’ve got family in the area, and you’re working in the area, and it means you can get a foundation degree without having to move away."

    Northampton Saints, external' new boy Kieran Brookes played in three of England's four matches at the Rugby World Cup, including the defeats to Wales and Australia.

    He told BBC Radio Northampton: "Playing in the World Cup was enjoyable, the fans were great.

    "But obviously the results and performance was disappointing and we've got to learn from it."

    Mary Markham, the Conservative leader of Northampton Borough Council, told me: "He's interested in the football club, but not the development of the land.

    "But because both work together we've been involved in the negotiations."

  7. Northampton nightclub crush: Police 'sworn at' while trying to save livespublished at 17:22

    Police called to attend a nightclub crush in Northampton in October 2011 have told an inquest that they were "sworn at" by party goers trying to exit the club in the early hours of the morning.

    An inquest into the deaths of two women - Nabila Nanfuka, 22 and Laurene-Danielle Jackson, 19 - heard from PC Daniel Ash, who said he tried to tell people he was there to save a life.

    He told the inquest people were "shouting in my face" and saying things like "what about my coat, what about my mobile phone?"

    The Ministry of Defence has told BBC Radio Northampton it's "reviewing" whether ex-service personnel with the lung disease mesothelioma could be entitled to more compensation.

    The leader of Northampton Borough Council says the process of putting Northampton Town Football Club, external into administration, external now lies in the hands of a judge.

    It's in an attempt to stop the club being wound up on Monday.

    Mary Markham told me: "We are having to hope for an element of goodwill but you have to think why would anybody want to cease the trading of a business if there is a way to save it?"

    There are yet more twists, turns and surprises in the saga of Northampton Town Football Club., external

    The Football League, external has now issued a statement saying it has "not provided any advice to Northampton Borough Council regarding Northampton Town. As yet, there has been no formal dialogue at all between the two parties."

    Earlier, Northampton Borough Council announced that it had taken advice from the League before applying to place the football club into administration, in an effort to prevent the Cobblers being wound up on Monday.

  11. Northampton club crush deaths: "People were fighting and jostling"published at 16:51

    Paramedics who were at thenightclub crush in Northampton in 2011 have told an inquest that party goers were hovering over them and fighting and jostling, as they administered CPR to injured people.

    An inquest into the deaths of two women - Nabila Nanfuka, 22 and Laurene-Danielle Jackson, 19 - heard today from one paramedic who said that she had to stop trying to resuscitate a woman, later identified as Ms Nanfuka, because crowds of people were trying to get into the ambulance where she was working.

    The paramedic told the court: "It was a volatile situation - people were very emotional."

  12. Asbestos cancer: MP secures debate in Parliamentpublished at 16:46

    The Conservative MP for Northampton South David Mackintosh has secured a debate in the House of Commons next week on the subject of compensation to ex-service personnel with mesothelioma.

    This follows calls from ex-Royal Navy engineer Fred Mynall, who says legislation prevents him from being compensated for his illness in the same way as a civilian counterpart with the same condition would be. 

  13. Asbestos cancer compensation: What is the military covenant?published at 16:31

    The armed forces covenant, external is a document that states that ex-forces personnel should not be placed at a disadvantage compared to their civilian counterparts.

    But a piece of legislation from 1997 stops ex-military personnel from suing the Ministry of Defence for injuries sustained while serving their country.

    Fred Mynall from Northampton says this prevents him from claiming compensation for cancer contracted following exposure to asbestos during his service, effectively leaving him £150,000 worse off than civilians with the same illness.

    Earlier we told you about ex-Royal Navy engineer Fred Mynall, from Northampton, who contracted cancer following exposure to asbestos during his military service.

    Mr Mynall says it's unfair that veterans who develop mesothelioma will not get compensated in the same way as their civilian counterparts.

    Mr Mynall told BBC Radio Northampton: "I just hope that Mr Cameron doesn't leave this on the back burner until such time that the 2,500 servicemen suffering this disease, dwindles down to almost zero."  

  15. Ex-Northants bowler Mark Robinson appointed England women head coachpublished at 16:03

    Former Northamptonshire fast bowler Mark Robinson has been confirmed this morning as the new head coach of the England women's team.

    He takes over from Paul Shaw, who stepped down as England women's head of performance in September.

    Robinson, 48, was first-team cricket coach at Sussex and scheduled to start his new role at the end of the year, in time for the South Africa tour in February.

    Northampton Saints, external coach Dorian West has told BBC Radio Northampton that the vacant England position is not something which concerns him following the news that Stuart Lancaster has stepped down.

    Both West and Saints director of rugby Jim Mallinder have in the past been linked with a move to England.

    West told me: "We're focused on what we're doing here, and trying to win the games we're playing in. It's something other people talk about."

    An inquest into the deaths of two women at a nightclub in Northampton has heard how people were "screaming" and "panicking".

    PC Steven Neal had to dry his eyes while giving evidence at the inquest into the deaths of Nabila Nanfuka, 22 and Laurene-Danielle Jackson, 19 - who died following a crush at the Lava and Ignite club in October 2011.

    PC Neal told the court: "I’ve never seen anything like it in my life, it was absolute carnage. People were screaming, the noise was deafening. You couldn’t hear yourself think.”
