Thanks for following us today for Local Live, on the day Northampton Saints' Dylan Hartley was unveiled as England's new rugby union captain

You can catch up with the story and reaction as it broke below.

We'll be back tomorrow from 08:00 with the latest news, weather, sport and travel for Northamptonshire.

  2. Hartley new England captain: 'He's not the knight in shining amour'published at 17:55

    Lennie Newman
Former Northampton Saints player and manager

It will be a controversial appointment, but most good captains play on the edge. He's not the knight in shining armour, coming down the track on a white horse, saving the princess from the tower, but Eddie Jones knows the characters he wants in his side.

You'll get the staunch disciplinarians saying, 'what on earth are we doing?'. They will use the word "thug". People who use that word have never met Dylan.

He's a thoroughly decent man. I know the man and I know what he can do for England. Everybody in life deserves a second chance.

  3. Foden: Hartley is 'real leader of men'published at 17:49

    Pete Cooper
    BBC Local Live

Dylan Hartley's Northampton Saints team-mate, Ben Foden, said the 29-year-old is "one of the best captains I've played under and is a real leader of men".

Foden said he's "gutted" not to be playing for England with Hartley as captain, but said it was "an honour to call him a team-mate and most importantly a good friend".

Saints' hooker Dylan said: "As a player, whenever I've had problems in past, you reset your targets and make goals. I always said to myself I'd get back in an England shirt and here I am. I always had faith I'd be back."

  11. Analysis: 'Struggle' to see him in new coach Jones' teampublished at 16:01

    Jeremy Guscott
    Former England international

My view on a leader is that first they are a consistent player. Dylan Hartley is in fierce competition with Saracen's Jamie George (right) - and George will probably be my choice.

Hartley is unquestionably one of the best scrummagers and line-out technicians in the squad, but I'm struggling to see him fit Eddie Jones' requirements in terms of energy, pace, fitness and enthusiasm.

Mallinder, who picked Hartley to captain the side in their victory over Scarlets on Saturday, said: "He was a superb captain for the Saints for six seasons, leading from the front and establishing a culture among the players which has been important in our successes over the past few years."

  16. Analysis: 'I'll be watching with half an eye closed'published at 15:11

    Paul Grayson
Former England and Northampton Saints fly-half

I coached Dylan as an 18-year-old and watched him grow from a chunky little loose-head prop to a very, very good hooker.

I've watched him then become a captain, in a bid to calm him down a bit and add some responsibility to him, and 99% of the time that has been the case.

Will he do a good job for England? I have absolutely no doubt. Will you watch it with half an eye closed thinking don't get sin-binned for something silly? Yes, I probably will.

  17. New England captain Hartley 'humbled' by supportpublished at 15:01

Hartley, who has been capped 66 times for England, became the youngest ever Premiership captain in 2009 when he became skipper at Northampton Saints at the age of 23.

The 29-year-old hooker made his England debut in 2008 against a Pacific Islanders XV and has previously captained England once before – filling in for Chris Robshaw in the 14-all draw against South Africa at Port Elizabeth in 2012.
