  7. Call for councils to spend more on care home placespublished at 08:35 British Summer Time 26 October 2016

    Stuart Bailey
    BBC News

This week we've been looking at the pressures facing the NHS in Northamptonshire and why some hospital patients face delays in being discharged.

There are calls for councils to spend much more money on care home places, so vulnerable people don't have to stay in hospital longer than they need to.

Northampton-based Avery Healthcare runs residential, nursing and dementia homes across the country - including six in our county - but managing director John Strowbridge says it's got no choice but to prioritise private customers.

"The problem we have is the fees paid by the local authority of around £420 is really about half the price that it actually costs to run a care home bed," he said.

"What care providers have regrettably had to do is start to restrict the number of local authority residents we can accept."

Katie Seal, external, a senior diabetes nurse specialist for the county, reinforces these findings and says healthcare workers are seeing more young people with the illness.

"There's a significant increase both nationally and locally. We know locally the prevalence of diabetes is about 6% of the population.
