Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff said on Monday that he "had to consider" Alonso as a replacement for the German who announced his retirement last week.

The two-time champion is contracted to McLaren until the end of 2017.

Briatore told Gazetta dello Sport: "We have an agreement with McLaren and we are going to respect that."

Wolff was always wary of putting him alongside 2015 champion Lewis Hamilton after their tumultuous season as McLaren team-mates in 2007 and BBC Sport understands he has made no approach to McLaren.

    Graham McKechnie
    BBC Radio Northampton sport

Northampton Saints take on Leinster in the European Champions Cup tonight - we're hoping for tries and a good game, but back in 1913 it was a bit different.

Northampton took on Dublin County in an encounter that was described to have "a lot of boxing was indulged in without anything tangible being achieved".

Despite the game ending 0-0 it was a "great game drawn" with the Saints' scrum half Ivor Lloyd, a Welshman, singled out for praise by the writer of the match report "Reynard".

It would be a surprised if tonight ended 0-0, as for the boxing, let's hope there's none of that.

  19. Council 'have to do something' about £17m spent on rubbishpublished at 14:12 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2016

    Pete Cooper
    BBC Local Live

The county councillor responsible for waste says the authority "have to do something" about the amount of rubbish going to landfill.

The council is considering plans for an energy park, which could include a waste-to-energy plant, to try and reduce the 170,000 tonnes of "black bin" rubbish they have to deal with each year, which costs them £17m.

    bin bags

Ian Morris, from the county council, says they are currently trying to "find the best option and looking at the best technology available".

The council's current contracts with various companies to deal with waste expires in 2020 so now is "right time" to look at the plans for waste disposal.

Mr Morris said the hope is that any new facility could break even or possibly make a profit.
