One of Northampton's best-known open spaces, Delapre Park, has been left with damaged grass and piles of rubbish after a group of travellers was told to leave the site.

Delapre Abbey is due to open to the public for the first time in 900 years this summer, but a clean-up outside will have to take place first - at a cost of about £5,000.

Phil Larrett, deputy leader of Northampton Borough Council, said: "We've spent several years lovingly restoring this property to create a new tourist attraction, and it is particularly galling to see a green flag park defaced in this way".

The council will now consider whether further security measures are needed to be put in place at the park.

  3. Feisty campaigner demands better deal for coach passengerspublished at 16:42 Greenwich Mean Time 15 March 2017

    Stuart Linnell
    BBC Radio Northampton

A campaigner says she'll carry on her fight for improved facilities at Northampton's Victoria Street coach station, even though the borough council says it will provide some of the extra seating she requested.

Dagmar King, who's 70, is a regular user of the coach station, which consists of two shelters with no seats and a single coin-operated toilet.

She's collected nearly 900 signatures on a petition calling for six benches and two working toilets.

    Dagmar King

She says she's pleased there'll be two seats, but she's demanding that an extra four are provided inside the bus shelters, so passengers don't have to stand out in all weathers.

She's also still determined to see the toilets improved.

The borough council says it recognises the current arrangements for coach passengers are not ideal and better facilities will be provided as part of the Greyfriars development.

    Quote Message

I rang [the council] on a Sunday to say the toilet wasn't working, and I don't get an answer. Don't we wee on weekends then in this town?"

A similar service has also been introduced in Rochdale.

The borough council says there's no need for it in Northampton as its collection service is working well.

    Martin Borley

The leader of the Conservative opposition on Corby Borough Council says responsibility for the £13m overspend on the Cube building rests with the Labour administration.

    Corby Cube

The council has confirmed to the BBC that it's given up trying to recover the overspend.

  12. Council will not recoup Corby Cube overspend costspublished at 08:38 Greenwich Mean Time 15 March 2017

    Martin Borley
    BBC Radio Northampton

Corby Borough Council has publicly admitted for the first time that it's given up trying to claw back the £13m overspend on the Corby Cube.

    Corby Cube

The £48m civic building containing council offices, a library, theatre and register office was opened in 2010.

A decision about whether to pursue litigation was made in private in January, but the statement issued afterwards was unclear about whether any court action was still on the cards.

The council has now provided the answer.

Action may still be taken to recover remedial costs for the roof of the Cube, which had been leaking, but as to whether the council is still hoping to recover any of the costs associated with the overrun, the answer is a simple "no".

When the Cube opened more than six years ago, long term loans were taken out to cover the costs and these will have to be paid off by council tax payers.

The council has declined to comment further about the situation.
