  5. Michael Ellis responds after election spending decisionpublished at 13:53 British Summer Time 10 May 2017

    Sam Read
    BBC Radio Northampton politics reporter

Michael Ellis has sent us a statement after it was announced he would face no further action following police inquiries into Conservative spending in the 2015 General Election.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said it had examined files from 14 police forces, including Northamptonshire, and while there was evidence of inaccurate spending returns it did not "meet the test" for criminal action.

Mr Ellis was the successful Conservative candidate in Northampton North in the 2015 election and is standing again in next month's election.

Other candidates who have confirmed to be standing include Sally Keeble for Labour, Jonathan Bullock for UKIP and Steve Miller for the Green Party. Nominations close tomorrow.

In a statement Mr Ellis said: "My focus has been, and continues to be, the people of Northampton North, and doing everything I can to ensure a Conservative victory in Northampton North."

Conservative party chairman Patrick McLoughlin said: "After a very thorough investigation, we are pleased that the legal authorities have confirmed what we believed was the case all along: that these Conservative candidates did nothing wrong."

The unisex headgear is already used in both Lancashire and Cheshire and is said to offer better protection for officers, featuring a hard skeleton based on industrial protective hats.

Explaining the change, Mr Thompson said: "The custodian helmet is very traditional, iconic and reassuring, but it does fall off.

"It is useless for running, you can't wear it in a vehicle and it is only for men."

Currently, female officers wear a bowler hat which has a different safety rating.

"On the basis that we have different levels of protection for men and women, we've gone for something that doesn't distinguish gender and is cheaper," he added.

A police spokesperson told the BBC the cost of the traditional custodian helmet was £30, plus a further £5 for a force-specific badge, whereas the new caps cost £12.59.

  8. Northants 'need three wins' for One-Day cup progresspublished at 13:10 British Summer Time 10 May 2017

Northamptonshire batsman Richard Levi says they'll have to win their next three games in the 50-over cup competition if they're to progress to the knock-out stage.

On the back of Sunday's 19-run defeat to Durham, the Steelbacks face top of the table Yorkshire at Wantage Road from 14:00.

"If we don't win all three then we're going to be struggling," said Levi.

"But we react well to pressure, so it's all in our hands. We can't blame anyone else - we've got to go out and do the work ourselves."

We'll have live commentary available here when play gets under way - and it sounds like Northants' captain Alex Wakely is ready...

  10. Praise for fruit and veg stall at hospitalpublished at 12:15 British Summer Time 10 May 2017

    Martin Borley
    BBC Radio Northampton

There's been praise for the introduction of a fruit and veg stand outside Kettering General Hospital.

The stall is open Monday to Friday from 08:00 until 16:00, and will be allowed to operate on a rent-free basis for its first three months.

Greengrocer Penny Benedict (right), who has two other shops in Leicestershire, said: "I approached the hospital to do some selling on site at same time as the hospital was looking for someone to do this - so the timing was perfect for both of us."

Sandra Walton from Kettering, who was visiting her daughter Samantha, said: "I think this is a fabulous idea. It gives you a lot more choices of healthy things to eat rather than just things like sandwiches.

"It really does promote healthy eating and encourages you to get something you might not otherwise think of buying."

Karen Patterson from Rushden added: "It's lovely, a really nice idea. It encourages you to buy some fruit and vegetables as part of your five-a-day. I was really impressed."

  11. Michael Ellis: No further action over election spendingpublished at 11:38 British Summer Time 10 May 2017

    Sam Read
    BBC Radio Northampton politics reporter

Michael Ellis, who was Northampton North MP in the last Parliament, is one of the Conservatives who has been told he will not face any criminal action over alleged spending irregularities by Tories in the 2015 general election campaign.

The complaints were that some spending was wrongly recorded as local rather than national expenses.

The Conservatives always insisted administrative errors were to blame for any spending incorrectly declared.

  13. Hospital launches fresh fruit and veg stallpublished at 09:09 British Summer Time 10 May 2017

    Martin Borley
    BBC Radio Northampton

Kettering General Hospital is trying to encourage staff and visitors to eat healthily by setting up a fruit and veg stall outside the hospital's main entrance.

"If we make it easier to buy the healthy stuff then hopefully that will encourage people to eat the healthy stuff," said Sue Newing, a director at Kettering General.

    Kettering General Hospital

"We've got a responsibility to educate people and to provide healthy food and that's part of the programme we've introduced in the hospital."

The idea is also receiving praise from national organisation Action on Sugar, which campaigns to raise awareness of the harmful effects of a high sugar diet.

"It's about having those healthy choices," said campaign manager Jenny Rosborough. "If it is there and available, then people are obviously more likely to have their five-a-day."

  18. Concern over proposed service stationpublished at 17:17 British Summer Time 9 May 2017

There's concern in villages in the south of Northamptonshire over plans for a new service station at junction 11 of the M40.

The development would include a hotel, warehouse and offices. EuroGarages - the proposed company to run the services - says it could create 1,000 jobs.

But people living in the village of Chacombe believe the facility is not needed and would fill local roads with traffic.

"We expect a two or three fold increase in traffic for the services alone," said Peter Gliwitski, who chairs the local parish council.

There is already a motorway service station at junction 10.

In a statement, EuroGarages said it had undertaken "a comprehensive consultation process," adding: "We are aware of the concerns that have been expressed by residents in Chacombe and we believe our planning application will address the issues that have been raised."

However, Cherwell District Council in Oxfordshire will make the final decision on approving the plans.
