We've 10 cars with times on the board now as this 90-minute session begins to simmer.

Sebastian Vettel has just gone quickest of all with a 1:30.320 - a second or so off the pace we saw from the Mercedes this morning. It's two tenths up on what he did this morning though, and set on the slower tyre.

  13. Alonso set for 30 grid-place penaltiespublished at 13:15 British Summer Time 14 July 2017

    Andrew Benson
    Chief F1 writer at Silverstone

Fernando Alonso already has a five-place grid penalty for using too many engine parts this weekend. Honda has made it clear he will have more but have so far been a bit coy about exactly what.

A little bird tells me that Honda will likely fit a whole new power-unit ahead of Saturday. That’s going to add up to a lot of nominal penalty places - 30, I reckon, although that’s to be confirmed - and a definite start from the back.

  20. Meet the Racemakerpublished at 12:12 British Summer Time 14 July 2017

Events like this really depend on volunteers.

London 2012 had its Gamesmakers, and for Silverstone it's the Racemakers fielding public queries and showing spectators where to go.

    Barry Schofield

Barry Schofield from Leeds, who is 63 and retired, is one of them.

"I love big sporting events," he says.

"It's my second year doing this at the Formula 1. In the past I've volunteered at the Olympic Games and Commonwealth Games.

"The main thing I get asked is 'where are the toilets?'

"But my favourite question was last year when someone asked where to look for the RAF Typhoon aircraft display... I just looked upwards."
