  6. David Miller death: Killers 'humiliated and degraded' victim's bodypublished at 17:51 British Summer Time 12 July 2017

    BBC News

Police have welcomed the sentences passed on four homeless street drinkers who were found guilty of killing David Miller.

As we've been reporting, Michael Hallett, Zena Kane and Joseph Catlin were found guilty of murdering the 56-year-old from Northampton.

Ian Cuthbertson was found guilty of manslaughter.

    They have all been jailed.

    David Miller's flat

Det Insp Philip Mills said the force was "satisfied" with the guilty verdicts and sentences.

He said: "David was well-known and well-liked, with vulnerabilities. Those who have been convicted of killing him preyed on those vulnerabilities.

"He was a chap who had taken them in and offered them a bed for the night, and was trying to help keep them safe and ultimately their actions meant he wasn't safe.

"They humiliated his body and degraded him and they attempted to dismember him.

"They caused a lot of harm to David before they killed him and a lot more harm to his body after they killed him."

He said the homeless quartet deserved "no sympathy".

"They have taken David away from his family and loved ones," Mr Mills added.

  16. Delapre Abbey restoration could face further delaypublished at 11:24 British Summer Time 12 July 2017

    Sam Read
    BBC Radio Northampton politics reporter

The re-opening of Northampton's Delapre Abbey could be delayed again - costing up to £80,000, according to local Conservatives.

The borough council's ruling Tory administration says the delay has been caused by opposition Labour councillors "calling in" the decision to invest more in the project.

Over the last year or so the authority had found an extra £1.5m for the restoration of the 900-year-old abbey.

Then last month the Conservative administration approved half a million pounds on top of that - partly needed to meet building regulations.

    Delapre Abbey

Labour opposition councillors "called in" the decision, meaning it must be looked at again at a meeting tonight. They say they want to make sure money is being spent properly.

But the Tories claim this has delayed work and opening could be postponed from August to the autumn.

While the Tories are now obliged to look again at the decision, they are likely to stick with the original plan.

We'll keep you posted on the council's decision.

  17. Horner 'amazed' Silverstone pulled plug on British Grand Prix contractpublished at 10:15 British Summer Time 12 July 2017

    Sarah Jenkins
    BBC Local Live

The boss of the Milton Keynes Red Bull team Christian Horner said he was "amazed" Silverstone ended its British Grand Prix contract.

The British Racing Drivers' Club, which owns the Northamptonshire circuit, says it cannot afford to host the race after 2019 unless a new deal is agreed with the new F1 owners.

    Christian HornerImage source, PA

Back in 2010, Silverstone agreed a 17-year contract to host the grand prix, but it believes the hosting fee, which has increased by 5% annually, is not sustainable.

Horner said the decision risked the race being moved to a London street track.

  18. Tesco-Booker deal to face in-depth competition probepublished at 10:06 British Summer Time 12 July 2017

    BBC Business News

The proposed purchase of Wellingborough-based wholesaler Booker by supermarket giant Tesco is to be subjected to an in-depth probe, UK competition authorities have said.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) says there are concerns over the proposed £3.7bn tie-up.

    Booker

The CMA said there are 350 areas where there is an overlap between Tesco shops and Booker-supplied independent stores.

It said the deal could be bad for shoppers in those areas because of reduced competition.

The CMA said if the deal were to go through, potentially Booker could offer inferior wholesale terms to the stores it currently supplies "in order to drive customers to their local Tesco".

Last month, Hertfordshire-based Tesco and Booker asked the UK competition regulator to fast-track its investigation of their proposed £3.7bn deal, from a basic Phase 1 investigation to a more in-depth Phase 2 inquiry, which has now been confirmed.
