  6. Silverstone activate break clause: Is this the end of the British GP?published at 15:03 British Summer Time 11 July 2017

    Andrew Benson
    Chief F1 writer

Silverstone's decision to end its contract to hold the British Grand Prix after 2019 does not necessarily mean there will not be a British Grand Prix at Silverstone in 2020 and beyond.

If that sounds confusing, bear with me.

Silverstone signed a 17-year contract with former Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone back in 2009 that meant it had to pay £12m for the race in 2010. But the deal had a 5% annual escalator built into it and a break clause after 2019.

The fee has now gone up sufficiently that Silverstone cannot continue to hold the race and break even, let alone make a profit. So it felt it had no choice but to exercise the get-out clause, which contractually needed to be done before this year's race.

    Silverstone grandstand

But Silverstone still wants the British Grand Prix after that date and Formula 1 still wants one too. The rub, of course, is that the race does not necessarily have to be held at Silverstone.

A street race in London has been rumoured as a possible alternative.

F1's new chairman Chase Carey told BBC Sport this week that it was his "priority" for the event to stay at Silverstone, but that there was "interest from other places, other UK options, that would have appeal".

It's not clear what these are, plural. But one of them is a much-rumoured potential street race somewhere in the east of London. Whether that is realistic is a different question.

For Silverstone to continue as host, F1 and the BRDC now have two years or so to try to hammer out a mutually satisfactory deal.

Realistically, this is the most likely option. But as Carey put it: "We are not there today."

  7. British Grand Prix future uncertain beyond 2019 as Silverstone activates break clausepublished at 14:37 British Summer Time 11 July 2017
    Breaking

    Kris Holland
    BBC Radio Northampton

So it's just been confirmed - the future of the British Grand Prix has been left uncertain after Silverstone's owner activated a break clause to cease hosting the race after 2019.

The Northamptonshire circuit has been home to the race every year since 1987.

However, the British Racing Drivers' Club (BRDC), which owns Silverstone, is struggling with the financial cost of hosting it.

It is believed it wants to renegotiate for more financially-viable terms.

We'll bring you more on this story soon.

The body of Mr Miller, 56, was found at his home in Northampton last June.

  10. Northampton International Academy: Council defends £10m price risepublished at 11:49 British Summer Time 11 July 2017

As we've just mentioned, the cost of converting the old Royal Mail sorting office in Northampton into a school has risen by more than £10m.

Delays in finishing the Northampton International Academy mean temporary classrooms (pictured below) are needed for longer than expected and construction fees have risen.

"This is going to be the biggest school in the county," said Matt Golby, the Conservative county councillor responsible for schools. "It's also the biggest project of its type outside of London.

"All the complexities are going to be amplified because of the sheer scale of it. But it's hugely important to meet our need for the places in Northampton."

The school will eventually educate 2,220 pupils each year, comprising of 420 primary, 1,500 secondary and 300 post-16 pupils. The total cost of the project now stands at about £45m.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the new cost projection has also come in for criticism.

"I'm steaming mad about it," said Danielle Stone, who speaks on education for the Labour opposition group on the council..

"It shows a lack of proper planning, a lack of good project management and people should have anticipated the costs. It's not good enough when £10m have just been cut from children's services."

  11. Cost to convert former post sorting office to school rises by £10mpublished at 11:40 British Summer Time 11 July 2017

    BBC Radio Northampton politics reporter

The cost of opening a school at an old Royal Mail sorting office in Northampton has risen by more than £10m.

A county council report to be discussed today, external says unexpected costs are putting its programme to create more school places at risk.

Pupils are already in lessons at the Northampton International Academy, which will eventually be the biggest school in the county, but they're in temporary buildings.

The move into the old sorting office on Barrack Road has already been delayed to 2018. Now a new report reveals how the cost has increased by more than £10m to £45m.

Delays to the work mean temporary classrooms are needed for longer than expected and construction fees have risen.

The county council says this is a complex project and there were no alternative sites in the town centre.

The new striker certainly has a decent pair of lungs on him, as he proved during his initiation song.

Considerably better than John Terry's effort, I have to say, but possibly on a par with another Town legend - The Beast.

  14. Timeline: Silverstone, the British Grand Prix and a chequered historypublished at 08:52 British Summer Time 11 July 2017

    Martin Heath
    BBC Radio Northampton

Formula 1 returns to Silverstone this weekend for the British Grand Prix - but even before the race begins there are questions over whether the Northamptonshire circuit will host the race in the future.

Members of the British Racing Drivers' Club (BRDC), which owns the circuit, are expected today to exercise an option to end its contract to host the event after 2019.

They are quoted as saying escalating fees are making it unaffordable. The break clause could be used to get rid of the existing contract and negotiate a more affordable one.

It's not the first time the future of the Grand Prix at Silverstone has been in doubt though...
