    The planned revamp of the Broadmarsh area will get people into the city centre, city councillor Francis Ashton has said.

    "The proposed scheme is about taking away all of this traffic that makes a barrier between people arriving in the city and getting to the city centre," she said.

    Many of you are not impressed with a Mansfield councillor's views , externalon avoiding the word "chairman" because it might be considered sexist.

    Independent Stewart Rickersley said he's "appalled" at political correctness and claimed that children are no longer allowed to sing Baa Baa Black Sheep for fear of causing offence.

    Sally Rootham said on Facebook: "I thought chairperson had been accepted as the correct term bloomin long ago? and of course we can still sing Baa Baa Black Sheep, it has never been banned"

    While Darren Hunt wrote: "I think Councillor Rickersey is being very naive if he really believes those things he's said, wo-person? Ba-ba black sheep banned, no one has ever thought this is real."

  7. Broadmarsh revamp: What are the plans?published at 17:10

    Here are some of the improvements the city council says you can expect to see once the revamp of the southern gateway to Nottingham, from the railway station to the bus station and up to the shopping centre, is complete:

    • A brand new public space on Collin Street linking the shopping centre with new cafés and shops on the ground floor of the car park building, which will be capable of hosting major events
    • Public art and a water feature
    • Better pedestrian approaches with safer junctions
    • Traffic currently using Collin Street and Canal Street will be re-routed onto London Road, Queen's Road, Sheriffs Way and Waterway Street West
    • Central College will be knocked down and rebuilt near the tramline

    MP Mark Spencer for Sherwood (Cons) says he thinks "it is time" for Sherwood Forest Hospitals Trust to be taken over.

    It's no surprise as he has been campaigning for this to happen for a long time now.

    He said: "It is time for a new trust with a proven track record to come in and sort this once and for all so that my constituents get the level of care they deserve."

  10. Trusts merger 'will improve recruitment'published at 16:28

    More now on the possible takeover of Sherwood Forest Hospitals Trust by either Derby or Nottingham.

    Interim chief executive Peter Herring said the merger could help improve the standard of care.

    "A long-term partnership will allow our hospitals to benefit from a stable leadership team and their strong working practices," he said.

    "The partnership will also improve our ability to recruit into key medical and nursing posts."

  12. Large fire in former chicken shedpublished at 15:46

    A fire at a large converted chicken shed in Edingley, near Southwell, last night took more than five hours to put out, the fire service has said.

    Fire crews were brought in from Ashfield, Southwell and Arnold to fight the blaze, which started at about 18:00.

    "The shed was around 20 metres away from the nearest house and nobody was involved or injured in the fire," said watch manager Frazer Cross, incident commander at the scene.

  14. Sherwood trust takeover bids: Backgroundpublished at 15:06

    Sherwood Forest Hospitals Trust was placed in special measures two years ago because of concerns about death rates and standards of care. 

    In its latest report the Care Quality Commission found a number of "serious problems", including almost double the national average rate of deaths from sepsis, a bloodstream infection. 

    Its chief executive apologised for letting patients down.

    Now the trust is in talks with the body that runs Nottingham's two main hospitals - which is already providing some tactical support - as well as Derby Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. A preferred partner will be announced in mid-February.

    The Labour group is short of an overall majority and the confirmation that the Tories are opposed to the revised budget plans could derail the whole process.
