The Environment Agency has started a public consultation into a plan to drill exploratory boreholes for fracking in Nottinghamshire.
Island Gas Limited has been given permission to drill on land near Misson to investigate the potential for shale gas.
Andy Barker, from the agency, said: “We will assess the company’s proposals to ensure they meet our strict requirements. As part of our assessment, we welcome comments from the public and interested groups on local environmental factors that may be important.”
The agency said its consultation runs until Tuesday 8 March and there will be an information session at the Misson Community Centre on Friday 12 February to explain its role in onshore oil and gas regulation.

The court previously heard, Louise Wright, 29, from Mapperley, had been stopped at the lights alongside Mr Haywood's vehicle and was heading straight when her bike was hit by the lorry.
On the day of the crash in July 2014, he said he had a colleague in the lorry with him, they had the windows down as it was warm and they had been listening to Ed Sheeran.
Prosecuting barrister, James Thomas, claimed Mr Haywood had not checked his mirrors before pulling off at the lights and had been unaware why people were shouting at him because of a "lack of observation".

More now from the Old Bailey where a man from Sutton-in-Ashfield who's accused of terrorist offences has taken the stand.
Adeel Ulhaq, who denies helping to prepare for acts of terrorism, has told the jury he joined an aid convoy to a Syrian refugee camp in Turkey and met victims of a chemical attack.
He said he used the online name "GuiltyMuslim" because his character wasn't Islamic and he didn't want to appear pious.
The jury heard that the 21-year-old received a Notts Police commendation in 2012 for chasing a robber who mugged a woman in Mansfield.

Prosecuting lawyer, James Thomas, claimed Mr Haywood hit Ms Wright because he had not carried out the necessary mirror checks.
"No I did check my mirrors," he replied. "But I didn't see her."
Mr Haywood said he initially thought he had hit a post or traffic light but stopped after he "heard a shout from somewhere" and saw people on the street screaming but he didn't realise they were directed at him.

I've been at Nottingham Crown Court this afternoon where a lorry driver is on trial for causing the death of a cyclist in 2014.
Giving evidence Adam Haywood told the jury he couldn't remember if he was indicating or not and insisted he had checked all his mirrors before moving off from the traffic lights at the junction with Lower Parliament Street and Pennyfoot Street.
The 30 year old of North Street, Langley Mill had been driving a lorry full of beer barrels when he is alleged to have hit cyclist Louise Wright.
He denies a charge of causing death by careless driving.
