  1. Caribbean sea rescue crew 'shaken'published at 13:01

    More now on the sailor who rescued seven people from a sinking yacht in the Caribbean.

    Neil Macfarlane said the crew, from the East Midlands, were unhurt but "shaken" when their yacht lost its steering gear and began taking on water, 12 miles north of Guadelupe.

    "Transferring from one bucking boat to another bucking boat, it's no party, it's quite difficult," he said.

    The skipper, from Notts, said the crew could only bring a proportion of their belongings with them.

    A sailor from Nottinghamshire has described a dramatic rescue of crew and passengers from a sinking yacht in the Caribbean. 

    Neil Macfarlane is the skipper of a boat on a cruise in the Leeward Islands in the West Indies.

    He took seven extra people -  all from the East Midlands - on board his yacht after they were forced to abandon ship in rough seas.

    The boat had lost its steering gear, he said.

    "Things worsened because they realised they were taking on water so that made things much more serious because they were in danger of sinking," he said.

    So the iconic fountains are going to be turned off for four months while the city council gives them a sprucing up.

    Head of traffic and safety, Steve Hunt, said one of the tasks will be to repair some of the jets that aren't working.

    "We're going to replace the electrics in the plant room, overhaul the pumps and the computer controls and generally give everything a tidy-up," he explained.

    "It's quite complicated because of the complexity of the equipment down there - we want to make sure we give it a good tidy and get the dirt out of the nooks and crannies."

  11. Events ban: 'Smoking poses no risk to health'published at 10:25

    Not everyone's happy about the ban on smoking at city council events - a smokers' rights group has said there's "no good reason" to ban smoking outdoors.

    Director of Forest, Simon Clark, said: "If an adult chooses to smoke in the open air it's no-one's business but their own. 

    "There's no good reason to ban smoking in outdoor public spaces. 

    "Tobacco is a legal product and smoking outside poses no risk to anyone else's health, including children, because the level of exposure is minimal to say the least."

  12. Police car on emergency call collides with vanpublished at 10:13

    This was the scene on London Road, near Trent Bridge, where a police car and a van collided last night.

    The police car had its blue lights on and was responding to an emergency call when the crash happened at about 22:15, a Notts police spokesman said.

    The officer who was driving was taken to the QMC with minor injuries and the van driver was uninjured.

    Police said it took about two hours to clear the road.

    The smoking ban at outdoor events in Nottingham has been brought about after "startling" new figures, the city council has said:

    • More than one in four adults in the city is a smoker, compared with less than one in five nationally
    • 22% of households in the city allow smoking in the home around children
    • The total cost to the NHS locally every year to deal with smoking-related illness is about £11m
    • The 268m cigarettes smoked in the city every year generate 46 tonnes of litter

    So the city council is putting a ban on smokers lighting up at outdoor events, such as the Riverside Festival, the Nottingham Beach and the Lord Mayor's Parade.

    However the ban has been described as a "voluntary ban", and the council says there would not be any fines or enforcement but "people will be asked not to smoke".
