    Counsell worked at Asda in Hyson Green and had booked leave from the store for his five-day trip.

    These are some of the items that police found at his house, including military clothing designed to protect against shrapnel from explosions.

    The court heard that Counsell converted to Islam at 21 and taught himself about the religion from extremist websites.

    Adam Deen, managing director at Quilliam, a counter-extremism think tank, said he would have got a skewed version of the religion this way.

    He said: "Converts are vulnerable to radicalisation because they are quite isolated and they only know of Islam what the extremist recruiters will tell them.

    "Whereas if you look at, for example, a young Muslim, he may have family members that will be able to educate him and give him a counter narrative if you like, but in the case of a convert, that doesn't exist."

    Police became suspicious when Counsell used a website to order military clothing.

    When they searched his house in Forest Fields they found IS beheading videos, terrorism-related articles and military equipment hidden in his child's bedroom.

    Det Supt Simon Atkinson from the North East Counter Terrorism Unit said they were "extremely concerned" so took "immediate action" to arrest him.

    During his trial, prosecutor Daniel Pawson-Pounds told jurors that Counsell's internet history showed he had searched for "cheap flights from Nottingham to Zamboanga" in the Philippines.

    He bought a return ticket and was planning to fly on 13 July last year but was arrested two days earlier. 

    The court heard Counsell, a father-of-one, had a "growing interest in terrorism in the Philippines", particularly in the Abu Sayyaf group which operates on Basilan Island.

    Counsell, 28, of Russell Road, Forest Fields, was in the "advanced stages of planning" to visit a remote part of the south-east Asian country and had bought military equipment to "engage in combat or support an extremist group". 

    He was convicted at Woolwich Crown Court in London today of possessing documents containing terrorist information and engaging in conduct in preparation of terrorist acts.

    Nottingham supermarket worker, Ryan Counsell, who had copies of a bomb-making manual and bought flights and equipment to travel to fight with a group linked to Islamic State in the Philippines has been found guilty of terrorism offences.

    Canon Nigel Coates from Southwell Minster said the carving was actually known as a grotesque, because it was inside the building, and gargoyles are typically outside.

    Rev Coates said it was made out of 14th Century Mansfield stone and the masons often carved their friend's faces in the figures at the bottom and used them to "take the mickey" out of each other.

    Some people have noticed one of the gargoyles at Southwell Minster is an uncanny resemblance to US president Donald Trump.

    A photo of the carving did the rounds on social media after it was tweeted by journalist Samira Ahmed.  

    So BBC Radio Nottingham's Hayley Compton went off to Southwell Minster to try and find it.

    She said, in person, only the hair was similar.

    One lane at the junction with Alfreton Road, Ilkeston Road and Derby Road is still closed this morning and motorists are again being advised to avoid the area.

    Nottingham Travelwise tweeted, external that demolition of the fire damaged shop would take place later, which will see some more closures and diversions.
