    Plans to make Leicester's 'most dangerous road junction' safer have been published today. , external

    City Mayor, Sir Peter Soulsby, has revealed details of how he wants to redesign and simplify the Five Ways junction - where Woodgate, Fosse Road North and Groby Road, Blackbird Road and Buckminster Road meet - as part of a wider £9m scheme to change the A50.

    There were 33 accidents at the junction between January 2011 and November last year  - making it one of the worst accident hotspots in the city.

    Mr Soulsby said the plans, which people can give their thoughts on from today, should help reduce confusion and congestion for drivers.

    A woman was shot with what is thought to have been a BB gun fired from a car in Swadlincote, police said.

    Officers believe the gun was fired from a white Ford Fiesta in Belmont Street on Monday last week.

  6. Trees damaged at Long Eaton parkpublished at 17:30 British Summer Time 18 April 2017

    Several trees have been damaged at West Park in Long Eaton over the Easter weekend. 

    Users of the park spotted that 25 newly planted trees had been snapped and damaged on Saturday morning.

    Adrian Sheldrick, said: "It's a beautiful park...For somebody to do this unnecessary damage, you can't explain it in words."

    This is the second time in a year that trees at the park, which has Green Flag status, have been damaged.

    Phil Wright from Erewash Borough Council said they "share the disappointment and anger of residents at this vandalism". 

    He urged anyone who had any information about the damage caused to get in touch with local police.

  13. Stabbing victim Hannah Bladon 'a joy to teach'published at 15:54 British Summer Time 18 April 2017

    Earlier on we told you about Hannah Bladon from Burton who was killed on a tram in Jerusalem on Easter Sunday. 

    Over the weekend tributes poured in for the 20-year-old from her family, school and her regular church.

    Annabel Stoddart, headteacher at Abbot Beyne School, said: "Abbot Beyne School are shocked and saddened by the tragic death of Hannah Bladon. 

    "Hannah left Abbot Beyne in August 2015 to follow her dreams. She had always wanted to study Theology and the University of Birmingham offered her a scholarship to do this. 

    "Hannah was a lovely young lady - determined, hardworking and a joy to teach."

    The Rev Michael Freeman said Hannah was an active member of St John's Church, Horninglow, where the community was "shocked and saddened" by her death.

    "We, an extended family, are doing all we can to support her close family and friends in their devastating grief," he added.

  16. Family escape fire after 'electric fault'published at 14:59 British Summer Time 18 April 2017

    A father has been describing the lucky escape he and his three children had last night when their home in Addison Street, Eastwood, caught fire. 

    Michael James Lowe told the BBC he was watching TV with his children around 21:30 when he noticed a "fishy smell" and saw sparks coming from the fuse box.

    He said: "I saw it sparking and popping and took the kids out straight away to a friend's house. When I came back it [the house] was ablaze." 

    Firefighters spent almost two hours tackling the fire and also rescued eight kittens from the house.

    A fire service spokesman said they believed the fire had started due to an electrical fault and the house was now "uninhabitable".

    Mr Lowe said much of the house had suffered smoke damage and they were now staying with friends and family.

    A 50-year-old man suffered head injuries in an assault at the Atrium pub, external in Castle Gate, Newark, in the early hours of Sunday.

    Police said the man was attacked between 02:00 and 03:00 and remains in a stable condition at King's Mill Hospital.

    A 25-year-old man has been arrested and released in connection with the assault.

  18. Teenager robbed near canal in Leicesterpublished at 14:09 British Summer Time 18 April 2017

    An 18-year-old was punched in the face and robbed of his bank card and mobile phone in Leicester, police say.

    It happened near the canal towpath at the bottom of Discovery Road on 5 April at about 16:45.

    Officers say the suspects were both black and in their late teens.

  19. Woman assaulted in Derby alleywaypublished at 14:04 British Summer Time 18 April 2017

    A woman was assaulted as she walked along an alleyway in Derby, say police.

    Three men and a woman came up behind the 39-year-old and pushed her to the floor, causing bruising and breaking her glasses.

    It happened on a path off Nuns Street between midnight and 01:00 on Saturday 8 April.

    The female in the group was white, of thin build, in her late teens or early 20s, and about 5ft 5ins tall, with light brown hair tied in a ponytail.

    The men were also white, of thin build and in their late teens or early 20s.

    Officers want to speak to anyone, external who was in the area around that time.
