A woman who kept dozens of dogs in stacked crates with no food, water, blankets or toys has been banned from keeping pets.
Margaret Greaves, 64, kept 30 dogs, six puppies, two cats and two parrots, in squalid conditions at her home in Sutton-in-Ashfield.
At Mansfield Magistrates' Court she admitted six charges which included failing to meet their needs and causing unnecessary suffering by not providing veterinary treatment.
RSPCA inspector Laura Kirkham said: “They were living in their own little prison cells - it was absolutely horrific and not something you expect to see in this day and age.
"The smell was disgusting - it was so overpowering that it was burning my throat."
Greaves has been given a lifetime ban on keeping dogs, a 12 week prison sentence suspended for a year, banned from keeping all animals for three years, and ordered to pay £500 costs and a £115 victim surcharge.

A modern slavery trial's heard that a Polish man was forced to work at Sports Direct, by a couple who committed benefit fraud "on an industrial scale".
Nottingham Crown Court heard that seven men were crammed into two squalid caravans in a garden in Aspley.
Bozena and Dariusz Parczewski have both been charged with forced or compulsory labour.
The jury heard they kept half the man's wages, then charged extra for rent and bills.
He was sent to Sports Direct through an agency called Blue Arrow, and the jury heard that he was assaulted and threatened if he didn't do what he was told.
The couple and their son Krystian are also charged with fraudulently claiming housing benefit, Jobseeker's Allowance, Disability Living Allowance, and Carer's Allowance.
The prosecution say they withdrew the money from cashpoints, using cards in the names of several Polish men.
The trial is taking place in their absence.
