  12. Asylum seeker 'sad' at legal battle to stay in UKpublished at 12:08 British Summer Time 20 June 2017

    Ian Skye
    Presenter, BBC Radio Derby

Hafizullah Husseinkhel worked with the British Army as an interpreter, and after leaving Afghanistan he hoped to settle in the UK.

He's been living in Derby for the last 18 months, but as he was fingerprinted in Austria on his way here he faces being forced to leave the country, despite glowing references from the Army.

The Home Office said asylum seekers are supposed to claim asylum in the first safe country they arrive in, saying it's only "fair" that the UK doesn't "shoulder the burden of asylum claims that should rightly be considered by other countries".

A judicial review next week is set to decide his future, but Hafizullah said it's "unfair" he might have to leave after working with the Army.

    Aleena Naylor
    BBC Radio Derby newsreader

A Radio Derby listener has offered to fund an Aghan asylum seeker's solicitor after hearing he is due to be deported next week.

Hafizullah Husseinkhel, a former interpreter for the British Army, is due to be deported to Austria, the country he first arrived in when he fled to Europe.

    Hafizullah Husseinkhel Derby asylum seeker

June from Burton called to offer to pay for a solicitor - but the Derby Refugee Advice Centre says unfortunately money isn't the only issue.

Janet Fuller, from the centre said: "The problem is that only certain solicitors can support asylum seekers with legal aid, and most asylum seekers don't have money, so it would be impossible for them to have a solicitor who doesn't have legal aid. It's a very complex case for Hafizullah, and there's only a week to prepare."

The statue of the character was given as a gift by his birthplace Pawtucket, Rhode Island, which happens to be Belper's twin town.

However, the testy tuber has once again been in the wars, with vandals this time taking off his arm.

John Nelson, Belper's former mayor, is not amused.

    Quote Message

For some reason the young people of Belper have a habit of wanting to turn him over, and when he tips over he breaks his arm. I can't understand why they want to do it.
