    Derbyshire Wildlife Trust says it is saddened by the government's decision to extend the badger cull in its efforts to prevent the spread of Bovine TB.

    The trust has already vaccinated 100 badgers in the county this year.

    Culls have been given the go-ahead in places including Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Wiltshire and Cheshire.

    Steve Trotter, director of the trust. said: “We work closely with many farmers... we recognise the pain and hardship of those whose cattle herds have been devastated by bovine tuberculosis, but killing badgers will not solve the problem."

    A cyber officer has been recruited by Derbyshire Police to advise small and medium businesses.

    Natasha Sagar will support the force in helping prevent and mitigate cyber-attacks.

    She will offer advice on understanding the risks of cybercrime, help develop a disaster recovery plan for businesses or review what businesses already have in place.

    A 77-year-old Guinness World Record holder is taking part in another charity walk.

    Anthony Allsop from Mansfield holds the record for being the oldest person to walk from Land's End to John O'Groats.

    It took him 50 days to complete the challenge in 2015, which he has done twice.

    He is taking part in the Mansfield 10k on Sunday, which raises money for Reach Learning Disability - a Nottinghamshire-based charity.

    Anthony said: "I usually do longer walks but I have been practicing power walking for this event.

    "I don’t use walking sticks but I always take an umbrella with me whenever I go for a walk.”

    A 70-year-old woman was woken by a burglar breaking into her house in Boulton, according to police.

    The woman was asleep in her armchair at home in Border Crescent when the man broke in.

    A wooden octagon-shaped jewellery box with several pieces of antique jewellery, including a gold ladies' watch and a necklace with a Madonna pendant, were stolen, along with her handbag.

    Police have said a man who spent a vulnerable person's money on drugs has been jailed for six years.

    Nor Uddin, of no fixed address, forced his 56-year-old victim to withdraw money from his bank account a number of times and give it to him to spend.

    The 31-year-old had been due to stand trial this week at Leicester Crown Court but instead admitted robbery.

    The victim felt he had no choice and was scared of the repercussions if he refused. He never benefited from the money and it was predominately used by Uddin to purchase drugs.     Police in Derby have been granted more time to question six people as park of a human trafficking investigation.

    The three men and three women were arrested early on Tuesday after police executed warrants at five houses in Derby.

    Officers found ten men believed to have been trafficked into the UK from Latvia.

    A campaign to raise £15,000 has been launched by Nottingham's Television Workshop - which has helped launch the careers of stars like Samantha Morton and Vicky McClure, and director Shane Meadows.

    The organisation has recently moved into Richmond House in Nottingham, but wants to finish renovating the space.

    Director Nic Harvey said: "It is really nice to be in a central place - we are right next to the station which is really great if agencies are coming down to run sessions or casting workshops."

  15. Bravery award gulag survivor dies, aged 89published at 10:39 British Summer Time 14 September 2017

    A Derby woman who was honoured last month for her bravery during World War Two has died.

    In 1940, at the age of just 12, Ala Starza was sent to a gulag in Siberia, where she endured six years of hunger and deprivation.

    The 89-year-old was awarded the Siberian Cross at a ceremony in Derby.

    Her grandson Dan Starza said the timing of the ceremony meant a lot to the family.

    He said: "It was unbelievable timing... it really was the pinnacle of her life and to have that in the last couple of weeks before she died meant a lot to her."

    Imagine moving into your brand new home - then a few weeks later finding out it was going to be demolished to make way for a new high speed railway line.

    That's what has happened to Anna Holt and her husband in Measham.

    Not long after moving in the couple received a letter telling them their house would need to be purchased by the government in order to build HS2.

    This was down to a decision announced in July to scrap the re-aligned route suggested in November 2016. Instead the government is reverting back to a similar route suggested in 2013.

    Conrad Jones from HS2 told the BBC the number of homes that will be affected still isn't set in stone but they will have a clearer picture next year. He said they are trying to "minimise the impact of the railway".

    In the meantime houses on the estate in Measham are still being built even though no one might ever get to live in them.

    A pub in Newark has been shortlisted as one of the best in the UK.

    Just Beer is one of 16 finalists competing for Pub of the Year in a contest run by the Campaign for Real Ale.
