Derby City Council says it plans to bolster security at the former Moorways swimming pool after a group of men filmed themselves inside.

Baggy Shanker, the council's member for finance and governance, condemned the group's actions as "disappointing" and "reckless" but said the ease with which they were able to access the building was a worry.

The video emerged less than a month after 12-year-old Adam Johnson died when he fell through the roof of a private-owned former factory in the city.

Mr Shanker told BBC Radio Derby: "We've taken this up with the demolition contractor. There was a review yesterday and I'm told they will increase security measures to try to prevent this from happening.

"But if somebody's really determined to get in I fail to see what we can to do to prevent it completely - but we'll keep a close eye on it and make sure we're doing whatever we can."

  4. Council leader calls time on pub firework displaypublished at 08:37 British Summer Time 3 October 2017

The leader of Nottinghamshire County Council has stopped a village pub from holding its annual fireworks display because it has become a "substantial commercial event".

The Plough at Normanton-on-the-Wolds has used a neighbouring field owned by councillor Kay Cutts and her husband for the last 11 years.

In a letter to the pub, the couple said what started as a "village community project" attracts outsiders and inconsiderate parking. They also raised concerns over safety because of the size of the event.

Pub landlord Mark Hughes said: "We were really disappointed because the field as it is, is just wasteland at the moment and it is not used for anything."

Currently, the government takes 50% of any surplus earned by the Mineworkers' Pension Scheme from its investments as part of a guarantee.

Ex-miner Mick Newton said: "It is very much an evidence-based case and if the Prime Minster wants a country that is working for everyone well I say this, the miner workers worked for this country for generations and now we need this country to work for us."
