    Gedling Borough Council has announced plans to buy Arnold Market.

    There have been ongoing talks between the owner and the council since the early part of the year.

    Last year more than 1,600 people signed a petition warning the market is in "dire need of renovation".

    A group of residents and traders set up a Facebook group called Save Arnold Market who have been campaigning to bring the market back to its "former glory".

    Officers are appealing for information after an 11-year-old boy was knocked off his bike.

    It happened in Carsic Lane in Sutton-in-Ashfield on 22 September but police have only just released details.

    Nottinghamshire Police say the victim suffered only minor injuries when he was hit by a silver or grey transit van.

    Police say there were three people in the van at the time.

    A 27-year-old man has died following a crash involving a his motorcycle and a van.

    Nottinghamshire Police, external said a 22-year-old man remains in hospital with critical injuries.

    The crash happened on Diamond Avenue in Kirkby-in-Ashfield yesterday afternoon.

  5. Two men admit smearing pork on mosquepublished at 13:24 British Summer Time 25 October 2017

    Two men have pleaded guilty to religiously aggravated offences after pork was smeared on the front door of a mosque in Nottingham.

    A St George's flag was also placed near the Al-Quba Masjid mosque in Sherwood in June.

    Jamie Mullins, 28, of Nottingham Road, Basford, admitted causing alarm or distress by displaying the flag and religiously aggravated criminal damage.

    Matthew Sarsfield, 31, of Sherbrook Road, Daybrook, also pleaded guilty to causing alarm or distress at Nottingham Magistrates' Court.

    Prosecutors told the court the pair had been watching a boxing match involving an English boxer and were feeling patriotic prior to the incident.

    The court was shown CCTV which showed Mullins smearing pork sausage meat on the lock of the prayer room door.

    The pair then draped a St George's flag over a flower display nearby before taking selfies.

    Mullins, who the court was told has sympathies with the English Defence League, is to be sentenced this afternoon but Sarsfield was fined £115.

    He addressed the magistrates himself, saying he would never harass someone intentionally and that he's "deeply sorry".

    A man was arrested at last night's Carabao Cup match between Leicester City and Leeds United following reports of a racial slur.

    Leicestershire Police said officers arrested an 18-year-old male at the match on suspicion of racially aggravated public order.

    The force could not confirm if he was a Leicester or Leeds fan, but added that he remains in police custody.

    Hundreds of schoolchildren have been taught about the latest scientific developments in DNA as part of a one-off lesson in Leicester.

    The pupils, from seven different schools across the city, were taught by Professor Turi King, an academic who helped work on identifying the remains of Richard III.

    It is hoped that the class, with the University of Leicester-based professor, will inspire the youngsters to become scientists.

    The long term risks of smoking e-cigarettes are to be examined by MPs.

    Nearly three million people in the UK now "vape" regularly - four times more than in 2012.

    Professor John Britton, who is the director of the UK Centre for Tobacco and Alcohol Studies at the University of Nottingham, says there's clear evidence that e-cigs are helping people to quit smoking.

    He said: "If you look at smoking prevalence figures for the UK over the last three years, you see a decline which is almost twice as fast as was happening before electronic cigarettes came along.

    "The challenge for all of us now is to make sure we harness that benefit while protecting users against any unnecessary and avoidable risk."

    People who are caught begging, loitering or drinking alcohol in large parts of Derby could be fined £100.

    It's under proposals for a public space protection order put forward by Derby City Council.

    This would allow police to fine people for anti-social behaviour including riding a bike or skateboard in an "annoying manner".

    The fine will not be issued automatically but only if a person breaches a public space protection orders which came into force in 2014.

    Malcolm Bibbings from Derbyshire Police said: "We have drug and alcohol work groups that can deal with the people and we do refer the person on to these particular establishments.

    "There is a core element of people who do not engage with these agencies and it is these people who are causing problems in the city centre."

    A decision on whether a professional footballer will need surgery following a car crash will be made later.

    Jordan Flores, 22, who is currently on loan at Chesterfield from Wigan, was involved in a car crash in the Derbyshire town on Monday.

    A statement from the club, external said that he had been transferred from Chesterfield Royal Infirmary to a hospital in Sheffield, where he remains in a stable condition.

    Plans for a new helipad over a car park at the QMC in Nottingham have been postponed by five years.

    Nottingham University Hospitals Trust said it will now be part of a new urgent and emergency care centre.

    It was originally going to be built in 2018.

    Peter Homa, chief executive at the trust, said: "Our future ambition is to build a new urgent and emergency care centre with a helipad that provides direct access to our emergency department.

    "Importantly, this will provide much faster access times and far fewer patient movements."

    Claude Puel's potential appointment as the new Leicester City manager would be "underwhelming," according to ex-Foxes winger Matt Piper.

    National newspaper reports have suggested, external that Frenchman Puel, who was sacked by Southampton in the summer, is the leading contender to replace Craig Shakespeare.

    Piper told BBC Radio Leicester: "If I'm honest, [I'm] a little bit underwhelmed.

    "I was surprised when I heard his name, but I was surprised when I heard [Claudio] Ranieri's name and we all know what happened after that.

    "He [Puel] did a decent enough job at Southampton...I'm sure some of the players came out after he was sacked and said they didn't enjoy his playing style, but he got them eighth and a cup final."

    A man who is hoping to raise £15,000 for an operation to remove excess skin caused by weight loss has said he has been "overwhelmed and humbled" by the response so far.

    Paul Stevenson, from Alvaston, once weighed 52 stone, but after having a gastric sleeve fitted he shed 30 stone.

    "I've had people come up to me in the gym and give me money to the fund," Mr Stevenson told BBC Radio Derby.

    "There has been a gentleman who came and knocked on my door where I live and he dropped off some money.

    "It is really overwhelming and really humbling to know people are seeing what I am trying to do and they are really supportive of it."

    Mr Stevenson has so far raised around £3,000 for the procedure.

    Well-known buildings in Derby turned purple yesterday evening to raise awareness of polio.

    Purple for polio marked the centenary of Derby's Rotary Club, which together with other international clubs, has campaigned to eradicate the disease.

    The father of a 21-month-old toddler who was murdered says he is "devastated" after her memorial garden was vandalised.

    He found vandals had poured disinfectant into the pond killing several fish.

    Ayeeshia-Jayne Smith from Swadlincote was murdered by her mother Kathryn Smith in May 2014.
