  6. School groundsman jailed for 17 years for abusepublished at 13:35 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February 2018
    Breaking

A boarding school groundsman has been jailed for 17 years for "ruining the lives of two vulnerable boys" who he abused more than 25 years ago.

Peter Weyman worked as a handyman at Chelfham Mill School, near Barnstaple, where he preyed on a 12-year-old pupil and groomed him with cigarettes, alcohol and gifts, Exeter Crown Court heard.

Weyman had come to Devon after moving from South Yorkshire, where he had also abused a boy over more than two years.

Weyman, 67, of Cleveland Close, Carlton in Lindrick, Nottinghamshire, admitted seven offences of indecency against the first victim and four against the second.

He was also put on the sex offenders' register for life and made subject of a sexual harm prevention order which restricts any future contact with children.

Lots of you on Facebook , externalhave been talking about Bradgate Park Trust charging a local artist to sell her images of Old John.

Felicity Zeb said: "This made me cross. Charles Bennion gave this property to the people of Leicester. For the trust to assume the right to make them pay like this pushes its role too far. It goes against the spirit of his gift."

Christian Smith said: "Disgusting. Who do Bradgate Park Trust think they are? Perhaps they would like to tell us all how much money they make each year from car park charges."

Phillip Cann said: "It costs a considerable amount to keep it looking as it does and as there are no magic money trees in the park the trust has to raise money in a variety of ways, the fact that the artist has decided to turn her painting into a commercial enterprise would suggest that she is also profiting from the painting so I don't think £100 is unreasonable."

  8. Charity 'putting a price' on landmark buildingpublished at 12:50 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February 2018

The artist behind these paintings of Old John in Bradgate Park has told the BBC it's "sad" that the park trust is "putting a price" on the landmark.

Sarah King has been told she will have to pay £100 to the Bradgate Park Trust if she wants to continue selling her images of Old John as a way of making money.

She told the BBC: "There are ways of putting money into the park - we all pay for parking - we love to go there with the kids. I just find it very strange that they want to put a price on it really."

This is not the Bradgate Park Trust clamping down on peoples use of a much loved image. It's nothing to do with free public use, public sharing, people creating artworks. It's where people are seeking to monetise that image for private profit. We are a charity. Any money we make from this goes straight back into running the park."

  9. Village in shock after six-year-old's deathpublished at 12:47 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February 2018

    BBC News in Tuxford

One woman, who lives nearby, told me she has seen a mother and older girl living at the house but had never seen a six-year-old girl or a father living there.

    House on Landa Grove

The neighbour's husband was at home when the girl was found. He saw a child being carried out on a stretcher and taken away in an ambulance.

He also saw a woman, who he assumed to be the mother, taken away in a police car.

The neighbour told me: "The first thing we knew was the police turning up and the helicopter presence, and there were lots of ambulances.

"The police photographers were photographing late into the evening because we could see the flashes going off.

"I believe the older girl goes to Tuxford Academy but I didn't know the six-year-old existed."

She only found out the girl had died when she read a news story.

"My husband texted me and said 'this is what happened' and we were shocked.

"It seems a bit scary. My husband said the lady came out saying 'Is she going to be OK?' and she was taken away in a police car after the stretcher was taken away."

There are two bunches of flowers outside and in the garden I can see a pink and purple wendy house.

Baroness Stowell of Beeston failed to show any real insight about the charity sector and was unable to withstand scrutiny, it said.

Culture Secretary Matt Hancock said the peer had his full backing and would be a "brilliant" chair of the Charity Commission.
