    Ancient pilgrim routes which took the devout across Europe are to be tackled by a man from Leicester on a tiny bike.

    Eric Ludlow, founder member of the Leicester Cycling Campaign Group, will ride along the Roman Way on a journey from Canterbury to Rome.

    Eric is raising money for Leicester Wheels for All, external which helps people take up cycling regardless of their age or ability.

    Poppies which first appeared at the Tower of London in 2014 are continuing their tour around the country.

    The installation, which is the brainchild of Derby-based artist Paul Cummins, has just gone on display at Fort Nelson in Hampshire.

    The wave will be on display at the Victorian fort for the next three months.

    The original installation saw 888,246 poppies displayed, one for every British or Colonial life lost between 1914 and 1918.

    A man has died following a crash on the A38 in Derby.

    Derbyshire Police said the collision, between Markeaton Island and Kingsway, happened at around 14:50 yesterday.

    The driver, who was in a blue Ford KA, left the road, entered a wooded area and collided with a road sign and trees.

    He is yet to be formally identified, but he is believed to be in his 50s, the force added.

    A council is looking to offload three buildings to community groups, in a bid to save around £70,000.

    Leicester City Council is offering people the chance to run Braunstone Grove, Braunstone Frith Recreation Centre (pictured) and Mayfield Children’s Centre.

    Organisations will be invited to submit business plans to take on the premises.

    Councillor Kirk Master, assistant city mayor, said: "By offering these buildings for local groups to run, we’re giving people the opportunity to deliver the community activities they want to see in their area."

    Investigations into how an "unknown substance" leaked into a pond will resume later, according to the Environment Agency.

    Officers were made aware of the substance on Wednesday evening.

    It's the second leak into Adam's Pond near Shipley Country Park, Heanor, in the space of two months.

    Paul Reeves, from the agency, said there is not a threat to wildlife but he is keen to find out what happened.

    He added: "We are also going to be carrying out some dye testing, using some harmless green dye, to confirm where it has been coming from.

    "Unfortunately there are a lot of industrial premises up there so it is going to be quite a time consuming job."

    Police are trying to find three men after an attempted robbery at a shop in Sherwood.

    Nottinghamshire Police believe the males, one of whom was carrying a knife, entered the shop on Mansfield Road on Wednesday but managed to escape empty handed.

    All members of the group are believed to be white and aged between 18 and 20, the force added.

    During World War One, 26 people from the area died, with five set to have streets named after them.

    Steve Dewiss, from the Royal British Legion, said: "By doing this sort of thing... it might just might just put a little spark into somebody and say 'let me learn more about what we've done'."

    A man believes his wife would still be alive if the probation service had acted on warnings and sent a convicted murderer back to prison.

    Simon Mellors, from Nottingham, murdered his former partner Pearl Black (left) in 1999, then killed Janet Scott after being released from prison on licence.

    Her husband, Chris Scott, said Mellors threatened to kill them both and followed Janet to work before she died.

    The Ministry of Justice said a full review into the case is under way.

    "If the probation service had done something and informed the police and had Mellors arrested, my wife would still be alive," said Mr Scott.

    Paige Murney, 23, beat Nigeria's Yetunde Odunuga on a split decision overnight to reach the final of the women's lightweight competition.

    "I still can't believe I'm here," said Murney, who is unfazed by the prospect of facing the Australian favourite, Anja Stridsman, for gold on Saturday.

    "I've come in here with absolutely no pressure because I've never fought at a major tournament before.

    "I only had my first fight at 60kg in November so I thought the timing would be too short to prove myself at the weight.

    "But obviously my coaches saw something in me and gave me the opportunity, and I'm making the most of every minute."
