A chimney will be removed from Leicester's Grade II-listed Trinity House, on De Montfort University's campus, if planning permission is granted.
The university has applied to tear down the existing 9m-tall, fibreglass chimney at the property, which is situated in the Castle conservation area, and replace it with a 1.5m-tall boiler flue.
The application says that damage to the current structure means it is unsafe.
The fibreglass chimney is not an original part of the building. The former hospital building, in The Newarke, was converted into office space by De Montfort University 20 years ago.

A funding page has now that passed the target. Joe said: “It means so much to the family to know you are all behind these fantastic children, they deserve the start in life that their dad would have given them.”

Talks to create an East Midlands Combined Authority are “simply ridiculous” the Nottinghamshire County Council Labour group leader said.
Alan Rhodes said he's always been in favour of a devolution deal but that removal of district and borough councils would hurt front line services.
Quote MessageLabour is completely opposed to the creation of a so-called 'super council' between the counties of Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Lincolnshire. Geographically the area is far too big, and the idea of such remote governance would not only destroy the identity of our Nottinghamshire towns and villages but would also mean the end of local decision making."
Cllr Alan Rhodes, Nottinghamshire County Council
