Mr Meshi had driven to Essex, from his home in Glossop, Derbyshire, in February 2016. He was asleep in his car outside his ex-partner's home so he could look after his children early the following morning.

Lord Burnett, the Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales, said: "They must have appreciated that Mr Meshi would cough and splutter, a moment's thought would have led anyone to conclude that some injury might be suffered from inhaling smoke and fumes and also that in scrambling from the car its occupant might hurt himself. But in terms of culpability the circumstances fall at a relatively low level."

The court rejected a bid by Hobbs to have her conviction overturned.

  16. Melton birthing centre 'unsustainable'published at 14:21 British Summer Time 3 May 2018

    Amy Orton
    Local Democracy Reporter

Health chiefs have given more details on the reasons behind the proposed closure of the St Mary's Birthing Centre in Melton after the plan was questioned by councillors.

The Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust said the move would be subject to a full consultation but added that maternity staff and resources are not currently being used effectively.

    Quote Message

With around 10,500 babies born locally in six locations, our staff and resources are not being used effectively. This configuration can put pressure on services in one or more locations at any particular time. It is also not equitable for all mums and their families. These issues have been recognised in a number of reviews of our maternity services, which have consistently said that in their current form they are unsustainable."

    Ian Scudamore, Leicester's Hospitals

Around 140 babies a year are born at the birthing centre but the trust said that a centre of its type needed 500 or more births a year to provide value for money.

Proposals would see inpatient maternity services provided by midwives and doctors in a combined care unit at the Royal Infirmary, supported by the neonatal intensive care unit in case of emergencies.

There would be a midwife only birth centre located at the Royal Infirmary and a midwifery only birthing centre most likely located at the Leicester General Hospital.
