    CrossCountry trains say diversionary lines have now been opened between Chesterfield and Sheffield.

    It follows an incident at Chesterfield which is being dealt with by emergency services.

    The train company has advised train passengers this afternoon that Chesterfield will not be served.

    Nottingham City Council has spent almost £300,000 on legal fees in a long-running dispute over back pay for staff.

    The dispute began in 2011 when a group of around 600 council workers took the council to court over a decision to freeze incremental pay rises for staff.

    Now, a Freedom of Information request has revealed that the council has so far spent about £290,000 on the case, with a number of court hearings having taken place.

    The council will face further fees as it's set to escalate the row to the Supreme Court

    The authority says it's important to view the legal costs in the context of saving £28m by freezing increments - a move it says has protected about 1,000 full-time jobs.

    More than £1m is set to be spent on exercise programmes for children, the elderly, and inactive in Derbyshire.

    The county council is set to dish out grant funding for several exercise schemes in a bid to tackle physical inactivity - a "global public health problem", according to its officers.

    Jog Derbyshire, which runs 137 sessions each week and has more than 6,500 members, is due to receive £100,000 over the next two years.

    Money will also be given to a scheme that helps children in council care to get fit and a group that promotes family-friendly walking routes.

    CrossCountry trains heading south from Sheffield are experiencing delays this afternoon.

    It's due to an incident at Chesterfield.

    The train company have not given any details about the incident but say delays and alterations are expected.

    The East Midlands' chamber of commerce has given its reaction to newspaper reports Rolls-Royce is gearing up to cut thousands of jobs.

    The Times said the Derby-based aerospace giant is likely to announce 4,000 redundancies following a meeting with investors on Friday.

    Chief executive Scott Knowles said: “It’s never nice to hear that any firm is considering staff reductions, particularly not if you are among those whose job is under threat.

    "Sometimes companies need to make difficult decisions. If making the company leaner today secures jobs in the future then, long-term, it will be seen as the right decision.”

    The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for heavy rain, external in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire this afternoon.

    It said major showers between now and 22:00 could lead to flooding on roads and delays on public transport.

    A former police officer in Nottinghamshire has spoken about his time working undercover investigating the crime cartel run by Colin Gunn.

    Gunn was jailed in 2006 for the murders of John and Joan Stirland.

    Neil Woods spent 14 years with the East Midlands Special Operations Unit investigating the Bestwood gangster.

    "I was very aware just how brutal Gunn was," he said.

    "He was so confident. He let everyone know that if he caught an undercover cop, that cop would be snatched off the street and tortured to death.

    "And that message was meant for me."

    The story is being retold in a television documentary tonight.

    Derby North MP Chris Williamson has filed for an urgent question in the House of Commons over potential job losses at Rolls-Royce.

    The firm has refused to comment on claims it is set to axe 4,000 posts as part of efforts to cut costs and boost profits.

    Mr Williamson said: "We must know what, if anything, this government intends to do."

    If the Speaker considers Mr Williamson's question is urgent and of public importance, external he will grant the request and Secretary of State Greg Clark will have to explain the government's position.

  11. Guns N' Roses star buys miniature train ticketpublished at 12:38 British Summer Time 11 June 2018

    There was an extra helping of heavy metal at the Stapleford steam festival yesterday as rock band Guns N' Roses arrived to check out the event.

    Bass player Duff McKagan bought a ticket for the miniature railway but became so caught up in a chat with the Melton Mowbray fire crew, who were showcasing one of their engines, he didn't get the chance to use it.

    "It's a shame Duff didn't get the chance to ride on the miniature railway," said Nigel Spencer, from the group that operates the ride.

    "He's obviously quite keen on fire engines too!"

    Later in the day, a chartered helicopter took off from a site adjacent to the 101⁄4 inch gauge line with lead singer Axl Rose on board.

    The band were staying at neighbouring Stapleford Park Hotel while headlining the Download Festival.

    Discount retailer Poundworld has gone into administration with the potential loss of more than 5,000 jobs.

    The firm, which has at least 18 stores in the East Midlands, has appointed Deloitte after last-ditch rescue talks with R Capital broke down over the weekend.

    It follows two years of financial losses for the brand, which has more than 350 shops nationwide.
