  17. Hunt decision 'could prejudice court case'published at 08:22 British Summer Time 11 June 2018

    Jennifer Harby
    BBC News

A Leicestershire MP has said a decision by the Health Secretary to allow medical staff to learn from mistakes when treating patients could prejudice an ongoing court case.

Jeremy Hunt's decision follows the death of six-year-old Jack Adcock at the Leicester Royal Infirmary which saw the doctor involved - Hadiza Bawa-Garba - struck off following an appeal by the General Medical Council (GMC).

Bawa-Garba's appeal is due to be heard in July and Alberto Costa, Conservative MP for South Leicestershire, said: "I cannot see how this will not prejudice the ongoing court case".

    Hadiza Bawa-Garba

Among the measures introduced by Mr Hunt are a recommendation that the GMC will no longer be able to appeal against the findings of doctors' disciplinary hearings.

"If I were counsel for Bawa-Garba, I would certainly be arguing in court that the secretary of state has accepted recommendations removing the right of appeal of the GMC. In other words, the appeal wouldn't be in the High Court in the first place," Mr Costa said.

  18. Rolls-Royce job announcement could come later this weekpublished at 08:11 British Summer Time 11 June 2018

    Gavin Bevis
    BBC News

Rolls Royce is to hold an investor meeting on Friday after refusing to comment on what it calls "media speculation" that it plans to cut 4,000 jobs.

The Sunday Times said many of the job losses would be in Derby, involving middle-management and back-office staff.

While Rolls-Royce has confirmed it does want to cut costs, it won't comment on the paper's claims.

    Newspapers

Financial expert David Buik told BBC Radio Derby he expected factory floor staff in Derby to be largely unaffacted by the cuts.

He said: "When you consider that the quality of the engines, which has to be paramount, and the fact Rolls-Royce makes an enormous amount of money out of servicing these engines, some of which I understand last about 30 years, the idea you could cut the workforce in that area, which is a very specialised job, strikes me as a non-starter.

"I suspect very sadly it is going to be the middle management that suffers."
