Almost 3,000 people have signed an online petition calling on Derbyshire County Council to scrap plans for volunteer-run libraries.
The authority is currently consulting on proposals to hand over 20 libraries to community groups, which will save £1.6m a year.
The petition calls on the council to ditch the plans and keep control of all 45 libraries.

Nottinghamshire Police say the 16-year-old boy died at Queen's Medical Centre shortly after 16:00, external - about 40 minutes after he had been pulled from the water at Colwick Park.
The force has said its thoughts are with the teenager's family.

A 16-year-old boy who was pulled from the water at Colwick Park Marina has died, police have said.
Emergency services were called to the park following reports a person had gone into the water and not resurfaced at about 14:00.
The teenager was brought out of the water at about 15:20.

We've had this statement from East Midlands Ambulance Service after a teenage boy was pulled from the water at Colwick Park Marina.
It said: “We received a call at 14:08 to an incident at Colwick Park, Nottingham. The caller reported a patient who was drowning.
"We sent a paramedic in a fast response car, a double crewed ambulance, our Hazardous Area Response Team and the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance.
"We worked closely on scene with Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue and Nottinghamshire Police to locate and extract the patient from the water. One patient was taken to Queen's Medical Centre for further care.”
No further details on the boy's condition have been made public.

An 18-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after a man was killed in a crash in Bruntingthorpe yesterday, external.
A BMW driver died when he was involved in a collision with a Ford Fiesta and a car transporter in Bath Lane yesterday afternoon.
The teenager has been released while investigations continue.

An empty pub in Langley Mill could be converted into shops and apartments after plans were submitted to the borough council.
Developer Bob Dunn has applied to convert the ground floor of The Railway Tavern in Station Road into two retail units and create five apartments by extending the building, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
The pub closed in 2017 and was sold at auction. Amber Valley Borough Council will consider the plans over the coming months.

A teenager has been taken to hospital after being pulled from the water at Colwick Park.
Police said they were called after reports a boy had gone into the water and not re-surfaced at about 14.00.
With the help of an underwater dive team police said the teenager was recovered from the water more than an hour later at 15:20.
The boy has been taken to the Queen's Medical Centre by ambulance. Police have not yet released details of his condition.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service said the swift actions of its staff helped to prevent a large grass fire in Long Eaton from causing more damage.
The blaze broke out on land near Denacre Avenue at about 10:00 but was quickly put out by firefighters.
The service added damping down afterwards took "some considerable time".

A man has been charged with stealing an 87-year-old woman's purse at the Royal Derby Hospital, external.
Police said the woman was targeted while at the hospital on 31 May.
The 32-year-old suspect has been remanded in custody charged with theft and is due to appear before magistrates tomorrow.

A high-profile prostate cancer campaigner from Countesthorpe has died.
Hugh Gunn was diagnosed with the disease and fought for his right to get a new experimental drug.
Initially he was refused abiraterone after the NHS East Midlands Strategic Health Authority had said funding for the drug was not clinical and cost effective.
He continued to campaign and in the end he got the drugs calling it the "best present ever".
His widow Kate has told the BBC it was worth the fight. She said: "You can't put a price on those extra 12 years of life and they were quality years."
