    A man from Leicester has been jailed for the rape of a 12-year-old girl.

    Police said Gary Smith, known as Tommy, showed affection to his victim by buying her presents but he would manipulate situations so he could be alone with her and abuse her.

    He also sent her inappropriate messages and encouraged her to do the same to him.

    The 50-year-old, from Imperial Avenue, denied two counts of rape against the girl but was found guilty by a jury on 13 June.

    He's been sentenced to 12 years in prison and must sign the sex offenders' register for life.

    Rosemary Jacob said: "Remember it well. We were lucky we didn't have stand pipes where I lived. I remember hubby and I went swimming at the outdoor lido in Nottingham and the water was full of ladybirds so we had to get out."

    Martin John Bolsover added: "Huge cracks appeared in my parents back garden and the grass turned yellow, tar on the roads bubbled."

    Celia Jones said: "Worked in an office in Beeston, that had glass windows all down the side, sun on them most of the day, with no blinds or escape from the heat, awful."

    A huge moorland blaze on the northwestern edge of the Peak District which is "continuing to burn" is being treated as arson, police have said.

    Greater Manchester Police said a lit bonfire was seen on the moors near Stalybridge on 24 June, shortly before a call was made to the fire service.

    Hundreds of firefighters, including crews from Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, have been working on the blaze.

    The fire started several days ago and has spread to nearby Saddleworth Moor.

    There was a panic this morning when workers building the new Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre in Edwinstowe uncovered a grenade.

    Police said the joint explosive services ordinance disposal team was called but the device turned out to be an old World War Two hand grenade that was empty and posed no threat.

    A horse walks into a bar...

    No, not a joke. This actually happened in Nottinghamshire during last night's match between England and Colombia.

    Diane Howard, from Awsworth, was out riding Meg when she stopped outside the Selston Working Men's Club for a drink.

    One of the customers took Meg by the reins and led her inside where she quietly watched the game with the other drinkers.

    "She doesn’t go in pubs, she’s never done it before," said Diane.

    "She never flinched or anything – she just watched the screen for a bit and she just came back out."

    A former Wesleyan chapel in Nottingham has been given a makeover by Nottingham Trent University.

    The Shakespeare Street building, which dates back to 1854, was bought by the university two years ago and given an extensive refurbishment.

    University Hall, as it will now be known, is due to open to the public later this month and will host summer graduation ceremonies.

    A rear extension featuring dance and music studios is due to be completed by next summer.

    A blind rescue puppy has given an 18-year-old Derby woman, who suffers from depression, a new lease of life according to an animal charity.

    Hope was one of three blind lurcher-collie cross dogs handed into the RSPCA at just five weeks old and has gone to live in Spondon with Emma Barker - an 18-year-old with Asperger’s Syndrome.

    Emma said: “I suffer from depression because of my condition, but she was there to bring me hope, and I was there to give her hope - so I just thought it was a really fitting name.

    “Hope’s made my life better because it’s a reason to get up in the morning. It’s a reason to achieve things in life because, if she can do it, then I can do it."

    Hope's siblings Leo and Angel have also been re-homed.

    A man has died in a crash involving two cars and a car transporter, external.

    Leicestershire Police said a BMW driver was killed when the three vehicles collided on Bruntingthorpe Road, near Lutterworth at about 16:45 yesterday.

    The transporter driver suffered minor injuries but the driver of the Ford Fiesta was unhurt. Police have appealed for witnesses.

    Investigating officer John Borlase said: “The cars were travelling towards the A5199 from Bruntingthorpe Road and the transporter lorry was driving in the opposite direction when the collision occurred.

    “I would like to hear from anyone who was in the vicinity and saw the vehicles being driven beforehand or the collision itself."
