A public inquiry opens today into the contaminated blood scandal of the 70s and 80s.

Thousands of patients were given blood products infected with HIV and Hepatitis C in what has been called the worst treatment disaster in NHS history.

Nottingham's Matt Gregory found out he'd been injected with contaminated blood products when he was 16. He described the impact it had on him.

"You meet someone, you fall in love with them and if you're going to have a sexual relationship with them then, I was putting people at risk.

"I could have potentially infected and ended the life of somebody I loved. For anybody that's difficult but for an emotional 16, 17, 18-year-old that's really hard work," he said.

He hopes to get answers and compensation from the inquiry.

  5. Authorities fined for housing paedophile near children's homepublished at 10:05 British Summer Time 24 September 2018

Leicestershire Police and Leicester City Council have been ordered to pay a sex abuse victim £52,000 after a convicted paedophile was housed near the children's home where the boy lived.

The police will have to pay 80% of the fine and the city council has been told to pay the remaining 20%. Both have said they will appeal against the order.

The compensation relates to a case in which a then 15-year-old boy was sexually abused by known sex offender Martin Todd. Todd had previously been jailed for three years, in 1997, for two separate sex attacks on young boys.

In 2006, he was jailed for three-and-a-half years for 10 breaches of a sexual offences prevention order, by befriending four families with children, although no offences were committed.

He was released in March 2009, and went to live at an approved address in Leicester - near the children's home where the boy was living.

During the following months, the boy was abused by Todd. At a trial at Leicester Crown Court in 2011, Todd was found guilty of two counts of sexually assaulting the 15-year-old, and one of attempting to rape him, between October and November 2009.

He was given an indeterminate sentence for public protection, with a minimum term of five years. The trial judge, His Honour Judge Simon Hammond, was so concerned about the circumstances at the time of the abuse that he asked the police to conduct an inquiry.

At the time, he said it "beggared belief" that a convicted paedophile had been allowed to live near a children's home.

  10. Caller rang 999 to complain about police helicopterpublished at 08:09 British Summer Time 24 September 2018

Nottinghamshire Police says too many people are still misusing the 999 emergency number, external.

A caller recently rang it to complain they were being kept awake by a police helicopter flying over their house.

In recent weeks, callers have also used the number to ask staff to book them a taxi, request advice on a rat infestation and find out when their car insurance was due to expire.

Emergency call handlers were also asked for train timetable information and had lost property reported to them.

    Calling 999

Sgt Paul Burrows, from Nottinghamshire Police, said: “A small minority continue to make misplaced calls to our emergency number, which takes our dedicated team away from dealing with genuine emergencies.

“Neither our 999 or 101 numbers should be used to complain about being kept awake by the police helicopter – not least because we only request support from the police helicopter to help us to look for vulnerable people, assist us in tracking down some of the most dangerous people in society or to help us in any other way to help to keep the public safe.”
