  3. Hospital says sorry after teen's heart infection deathpublished at 15:13 British Summer Time 19 October 2018

    BBC News

Hospital bosses have apologised for not doing more to help a Derbyshire teenager who died from an undiagnosed heart infection.

Daniel Elton died at his home in Castle Gresley in November 2015, a day after being discharged from Queen's Hospital in Burton where he'd undergone tests for a range of symptoms, including abdominal pain and anaemia.

A post-mortem examination found he'd been suffering from endocarditis, a rare infection of the inner lining of the heart.

At an inquest into his death in Derby, assistant coroner Louise Pinder said there had been "a gross failure to provide medical attention for Daniel, who was clearly in a dependent position, given the fact that he was critically unwell" at hospital in the days before his death.

However, recording a narrative conclusion she went on to say there was "no clear and direct causal connection" between the failure to take action at this point and Mr Elton's death.

The inquest had heard from an independent cardiologist that even if the teenager had been diagnosed at this point and received optimal treatment, he is unlikely to have survived.

Ms Pinder also concluded GPs who failed to diagnose endocarditis could not have been expected to do so with the information available to them at that time.

In a statement, Queen's Hospital bosses apologised for the standard of care Mr Elton received and said changes had been made.
