    A judge has issued a warrant for the arrest of a banned driver from Leicestershire accused of causing a crash on the M42 which killed a pensioner and seriously injured his wife., external

    Tony Owens, 37, of Westfield Avenue, Ashby-de-La-Zouch, pleaded not guilty at Warwick Crown Court last year and had been due to stand trial this week - but he failed to turn up.

    A decision about the future of Moorways swimming pool in Derby has been delayed for a third month.

    The city council is considering expanded plans for the pool complex, which will be more "family focused".

    A decision had been expected at next week's cabinet meeting, but it's been pulled from the agenda again.

    Derby City Council said a "value engineering exercise", which is intended to cut down costs, is still ongoing.

    In a statement, the authority said it still planned to go ahead with the development and called it "a bigger and better vision".

    Hearing someone suggest Karaoke for the work do may fill many of us with dread, but scientists have discovered singing with your colleagues could actually reduce stress.

    Researchers at the University of Leicester studied people who attend work place choirs and found it also made them much more likely to feel supported by their co-workers.

    So next time you're feeling the pressure why not suggest a sing-along to the person in the desk next to you?

    A man has been found living in a tent on the grounds of a Nottingham church.

  5. Thousands sign up to buy Rock City floorpublished at 09:34 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January 2019

    Thousands of people have already signed up to buy a piece of the famously-sticky Rock City dancefloor.

    The Nottingham music venue's 39-year-old floor has been torn up to make way for a new one and people are now being given the chance to buy 3,000 pieces.

    AJ Stevenson from Rock City said they had been surprised by the interest, which has seen 3,500 people sign up in one day.

    "It's just gone absolutely huge," he said.

    "So suddenly we're working out how many floor pieces we've got and how long it'll take to sort it out."

    He said the pieces would be sold "on a first come, first served basis" and could cost up to £20, although a price hasn't been decided yet.

    The new dancefloor, a basketball floor from a YMCA gym, is expected to be down in time for Friday's Enter Shikari gig.

    Plans to charge households a £42 annual membership to use tennis courts in a Leicester park are facing a backlash from residents and councillors.

    The use of most courts across the city is free, but signs have been placed around Victoria Park telling people that from 21 January they will have to pay the charge.

    Leicester City Council said they had wanted to introduce a membership scheme after the recent refurbishment of the courts.

    A spokesman said the plans have now been put on hold while, at the request of councillors, they look at how similar schemes are run around the country.

    A company has been fined nearly £50,000 for endangering people who were looking after an unoccupied building.

    Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service said inspectors found people, known as "guardians", staying in rooms at the former Chesterfield Hotel in Corporation Street

    VPS (UK) Ltd, which specialises in security for vacant properties, admitted three fire safety offences.

    Rubbish was found in rooms, some escape routes were blocked and fire alarms and doors were not tested regularly, according to the fire service.

    At Chesterfield Magistrates' Court, the firm was fined £46,668 and ordered to pay costs of £12,054, as well as a victim surcharge of £170.

  9. Changes for this year's Bakewell Showpublished at 08:22 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January 2019

    Derbyshire's annual Bakewell Show is to be scaled back and held earlier.

    Traditionally, the event runs on the first Wednesday and Thursday of August but this year will take place on Sunday 30 June.

    The show was cancelled for the first time in its history last year because of bad weather, and there were also problems in 2017 when heavy rain disrupted parking arrangements.

    This year, the the show celebrates its 200th anniversary.

    Organisers say they also want it to be more family-friendly, with a focus on livestock and agriculture and fewer trade stands.
