    A road was closed this morning after a car being chased by police hit a gas supply.

    Officers spotted a car in Leicester's Abbey Lane believed to be stolen in the early hours of this morning but the driver tried to escape.

    The police stopped the car using a "tactical collision" and two people made off on foot.

    An 18-year-old woman from Leicester was arrested on suspicion of robbery and has since been released. Police are trying to find the other occupant.

    After the crash the gas company attended and Abbey Lane was temporarily closed.

    The Football Association has announced it will be investigating an accusation of "spying" at a Derby County training session yesterday.

    Derbyshire Police said a man was seen "acting suspiciously" at 11:20 yesterday near the club's Moor Farm complex. Derby County later accused the man of being a Leeds United employee.

    The Rams, who visit Leeds United tonight for a Championship tie, released a statement today saying they were "in discussion with Leeds club officials in relation to this incident".

    In a statement, the FA said: "We are aware of the incident at Derby County’s training ground and we will be investigating the matter."

    A new police station has opened its doors.

    Officers have been working from the base in Hinckley Road, Leicester, since November, which was officially opened today.

    It was built on the site next to the old building, which is currently for sale. The force said it was expensive to run and costly to repair.

    A 51-year-old lost vision in one eye after fans started throwing coins and bottles at each other at a League Two football match.

    Doctors are not sure whether the Lincoln City season ticket holder will regain vision after he was hit in the eye in November at the end of the game against Mansfield Town in Lincoln.

    Police arrested a man they suspect of carrying this knife "literally right outside" their station.

    The 30-year-old was arrested on suspicion of possessing a bladed article two minutes after being spotted by officers in Hyson Green.

    Accusations that a Leeds United employee was "spying" on a Derby County training session is a matter for the clubs to resolve, the English Football League (EFL) have said.

    "It is, of course, up to Derby County as to how they progress this matter but as of yet we have received no complaint or contact from the club," an EFL spokesman said.

    Police are investigating a fire which started in a pile of fly-tipped rubbish as arson.

    The fire service sent three crews to tackle the blaze at around 20:00 yesterday, which had spread to a nearby garden.

    The house, in Clayfield Close, Bulwell, was evacuated but damage was limited to a first floor window pane and guttering.

    Police say the fire was started by a "reckless act" as opposed to being deliberate but are treating it as criminal damage arson.

    A man from Leicester has been jailed for eight months after being caught with 1.2m illegal cigarettes.

    HM Revenue and Customs say they caught Altaf Umarji, 47, and three others, with the cache of tobacco in January 2014 in Talke, Staffordshire.

    Umarji, of Gwendolen Road, Leicester, was sentenced to eight months in prison at Stoke Crown Court yesterday, having pleaded guilty to fraudulent evasion of excise duty.

    The three other men had also pleaded guilty to the same offence and were sentenced yesterday.

    The developer of the proposed 17-storey apartment block in Derby has said there seems to be "some retreat" from the city council over last night's planning decision.

    Godwin Developments say they thought they already had approval for The Landmark application and are now seeking clarification.

    Last night the planning committee met and said they were "minded" to give permission for this plan to go ahead but a final decision will be made in February.

    Godwin Developments said the chair of the council's planning committee, Robin Wood, "clearly doesn't understand the application we put forward".

    However, Mr Wood said there was no demand for the building in Derby and homeless people and asylum seekers may end up being housed there.

    Ten people arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of supplying class A drugs have been released while investigations continue.

    A man and two women were held after a warrant was executed in Sandown Road, Glenfield and seven more men were arrested after vehicles were stopped in Leicester city centre on the same evening.

    The postmaster in Southwell has called the theft of their cash machine "devastating" for their business and the whole town.

    Kam Nijjar told BBC East Midlands Today they would try to reopen the Post Office by Tuesday next week.

    Mr Nijjar said the cash machine had only been in place for a year, and as there are no longer any banks in the town, there are currently no banking services for people in the town centre.

    Police are now checking CCTV footage from the street.
